Here are this week's features. Clicking the "more resources like this" link below each listing will present a list of our most recent additions for the same subject area and grade level .

Repeat After Us - Grades 0 - 12
This online language lab/library has made classic poems and other literature available for listeners to hear and read. It is searchable by genre, authors, and titles. For younger children, it has nursery rhymes and tongue twisters. Besides literature, it contains non-fiction writings, mostly by political figures as well as famous plays. Difficulty level is indicated for each recording, ranging from beginning to advanced. The audio player is downloadable at the site. Help your learning support students or challenged readers by letting them listen to texts. Recordings are made by volunteers. Your service club may want to help record some texts for fellow students, as well. 6958

In the Classroom:
Make sure you turn on your speakers or have headphones available. You can copy the exact URL or make a shortcut directly to a listening selection for your elementary or ESL students to listen in the lab or at a classroom center. If your computers are "locked down" preventing downloads, you may have to request that tech help install the player.

Into the Book - Grades 0 - 6
This interactive site is a work-in-progress as of 2006, but is destined to be a MUST-HAVE for anyone who teaches reading. The site includes sections for both students and teachers. Teach about the eight concepts of reading comprehension: Prior Knowledge, Making Connections, Questioning, Visualization, Inferring, Summarizing, Evaluating, Synthesizing. The Teacher portion provides lessons, videos, teacher tips, recommended books, links, rubrics and downloads. The Student portion offers interactive, technology-based activities for each of the comprehension concepts. Check out the student-created Visualizing activities, including drawing pictures and adding music using the online tools. IMPORTANT: To enter the student portion, try using first name plus the number 1(Ex. Mary1). 7236

In the Classroom:
Share the tools on a projector for the first time, then use them as center time for students.

Kid's Dinos - Grades 3 - 6
This site is all about Dinosaurs, monsters and terrible lizards. Kids can locate the dinosaur or other beast they're searching for, play a dino ID game, bring up dinosaur cards, create a customized game, read about the featured dinosaur, or browse other articles. A well-organized dino-finding tool, which uses Flash, allows great flexibility in the exciting search while at the same time providing users with valuable facts and interesting details. The games reinforce identification and classification of dinosaurs. Kids can also vote for their favorite dinosaurs. 7095

In the Classroom:
Teachers can use the custom list to create reviews and quizzes when teaching about certain types of dinosaurs. You might want to use this site on an interactive whiteboard to start, then make it a ceenter during your dinosaur unit.

ALAN Book Club Online - Grades 6 - 12
The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents invites teens to join an on-going online book club. They read the selected book, contribute one question per book, and join the discussion set up in chat format. After the book chat, an opportunity to speak with the author is available in an “author chat” a few days later. Requires Userplane Webchat download. 7214

In the Classroom:
A great outlet to suggest to your teens who love to read but don't find enough others with similar interests! INclude this as a link from your teacher or school library web site. If you decide to use the web chat feature at school, you may have difficulty getting through filtering on your school network. Pretest this and get tech help, if you plan to have your class "chat" with an author in class on a projector.

Kiz Club Stories - Grades 0 - 2
Help students develop fluency while they listen to stories and watch the words being highlighted. Three levels of stories are available. Books can also be printed. Teachers will find printable resources on phonics, ABC’s, crafts and language arts topics. Site is worth checking out despite the ads on the side to purchase books. Flash and Adobe are required for parts of the site. Get them from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page 7231

In the Classroom:
Use headphones with the computers or laptops if using this site with a group of students so they can all practice fluency without the distraction of hearing the student next to them.

Learning Resources - Grades 5 - 8
This site, intended to help build comprehension and current events knowledge, contains a “current story” from CNN San Francisco bureau and CBS 5 - KPIX (CBS Broadcasting) news stories. From the archives, you can select a story for your students to read (abridged or complete), listen to, or view a brief video. Although this site is designed for use in adult literacy, its flexibility and reading skills options (vocabulary, word selection, multiple choice, sequencing, and conclusions)support comprehension activities. Because the stories are offered in two forms, you can easily differentiate instruction. Students can also view an outline of the story before or after they listen/read. Homework suggestions and follow-up links lead students to more information. 6880

In the Classroom:
Include this as an option if you require current events reports or are working on content reading to reinforce good reading strategies. You can build entire lessons around the activities, done on a projector, individual computers, or an interactive whiteboard. Click "Current story" to tart the activities.

Stockwatch-Catch, Cash and Community - Grades 9 - 12
This is an online simulation game focuses on sustainable fishing (NOT the Stock Market as the title might lead one to believe!). Students can manipulate variables (numbers of fishing boats, catch quotas) and see how those changes affect both the bottom line and the environment. Each change results in a year's worth of data (up to 15 year's worth), and then reactions from different stakeholders. The game can be played at a basic level and at an advanced level. 7160

In the Classroom:
The game could be helpful in showing students that "success" in a business that affects the environment can be measured in a number of ways: cash flow, environmental impact, community support. The game could be played cooperatively by groups of students on an interactive whiteboard, or could be played individually by students. Since it's available on-line, students could be instructed to play the game at home or during study halls and then be prepared to share their individual data in group discussion. Requires FLASH!
