It adapts well as a teaching tool for math classrooms. As educators recently celebrated Math Storytelling Day on September 25, it&#8217;s the perfect time to reflect on how this powerful tool can transform math classrooms. The annual event highlights the importance of narratives that demonstrate how mathematics enhances our everyday lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone loves a good story, and telling stories as part of math instruction provides many benefits. But developing an effective and interesting story that incorporates math takes time and skill. This is where AI tools like ChatGPT (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), Claude (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), and Perplexity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) come to the rescue to provide time-saving support by generating creative and interesting stories for any classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with\u00a0a prompt framework like the Five S Model (described in detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2024\/07\/prompt-engineering-for-teachers-making-the-most-of-ai-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this TeachersFirst blog post<\/a>) to describe a story you want to create. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Set the scene:<\/strong> Begin by describing your context. For example: \u201cI am a fifth-grade math teacher with 23 students in my class. Two students have IEPs, one student uses hearing aids, and two students are in the gifted program.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be specific:<\/strong> When writing your prompt, include a sufficient amount of detail. Here is an example: \u201cGenerate a one-hour lesson plan that ties into Math Storytelling Day. The math topic is converting fractions to decimals. My students have a basic knowledge of this topic but have not mastered all of the fifth-grade goals yet. As part of the lesson, I want to be the narrator and stop at different points during the story for groups of students to solve the math problems.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Simplify language:<\/strong> When generating your prompt, use your own words\u2014you don\u2019t need to use jargon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Structure the feedback:<\/strong> Use prompts to adjust the output to fit your needs. For example: \u201cDuring this lesson, all students should be actively involved in the storytelling activity. Include a follow-up activity where students write and share math stories.\u201d Keep prompting as often as necessary to achieve the result you want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share feedback:<\/strong> Using the prompts above, ChatGPT generated a lesson plan based on a story called \u201cThe Big Game Statistics\u201d and provided everything except the story. After a follow-up prompt asking for a story that includes stopping points for activities, ChatGPT added a football story set in the town of Mathville. Additional follow-ups might consist of a change of setting, use of a different topic such as a favorite TV show or movie, or asking it to include hints for each activity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are example conversations with <a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/share\/96d70d93-ae50-42ea-ad8e-ec3b9889eebd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/search\/i-am-a-5th-grade-math-teacher-bVgnTcEtSPKz9RDIf0ZMFw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perplexity<\/a> using the scenario and prompts described above. \u00a0As always, edit the output to fit your specific needs and always verify the accuracy of the information shared when using AI tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can extend learning by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_SEP_26_Math_Storytelling_AI_Hall.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_SEP_26_Math_Storytelling_AI_Hall-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_SEP_26_Math_Storytelling_AI_Hall-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_SEP_26_Math_Storytelling_AI_Hall-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_SEP_26_Math_Storytelling_AI_Hall.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asking your AI tool to create a worksheet for students to use that accompanies your story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking your AI tool for extension activities related to your math topic, such as ideas for math stations, digital tools for storytelling, or picture book lists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adding math picture books to your class library and encouraging students of all ages to read and discuss how these books incorporate storytelling with math. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/picture-books-about-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This list<\/a> from We Are Teachers shares several elementary level book suggestions that are sure to interest even middle and high school students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using Microsoft Designer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or another generative AI tool to create an image that corresponds to your story. Have students view it as they enter your classroom and ask them to predict what it will be about. Try using the prompt, \u201cCreate an image about a story called \u2018The Adventures of Fraction Friends in Football Land.\u2019 The setting is Math Land. Use fractions and decimals in the image.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Introducing storytelling into math lessons makes learning enjoyable and relatable to students.
