Roosevelt<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each year, we commemorate Pearl Harbor Day to remember and honor the 2,403 Americans killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This significant event led to the United States\u2019s consequential decision to declare war on Japan and enter World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although this date seems to be far in the past, the last survivor of the attack on the USS Arizona, Lou Conter, just died on April 1, 2024, at the age of 102.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the attack on Pearl Harbor led to many consequential events, students should have opportunities to look at this event from many different viewpoints. One way to share this information is through choice boards, which allow students to choose different activities that relate to the same topic. Providing students with choices leads to higher engagement because it gives them a say in the materials they use in the learning process and the task they complete to demonstrate their understanding of the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some suggestions to use when creating a task choice board about Pearl Harbor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pearl Harbor-Themed Choice Board Activities:<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024_NOV_28_Remembering_PearlHarbor_Choice_Boards_Hall.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024_NOV_28_Remembering_PearlHarbor_Choice_Boards_Hall-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024_NOV_28_Remembering_PearlHarbor_Choice_Boards_Hall-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024_NOV_28_Remembering_PearlHarbor_Choice_Boards_Hall-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024_NOV_28_Remembering_PearlHarbor_Choice_Boards_Hall.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask students to build an Interactive Timeline of the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the repercussions that followed using Canva\u2019s timeline creator (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Timeline JS (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce and share a podcast where students role-play diplomatic discussions after the attack. Anchor (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) and Buzzsprout (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) are two free and easy-to-use podcast creation tools.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask students to write diary entries and letters to home from different perspectives, such as those of soldiers, civilians, and survivors of the attack on the USS <em>Arizona<\/em>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have students create a map using Google My Maps (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) that shows the positions of ships and airplanes involved in the attack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Political cartoons offer a unique perspective on a country&#8217;s attitudes and feelings about a significant event. Ask students to analyze political cartoons about Pearl Harbor using a graphic organizer like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/education\/lessons\/worksheets\/cartoon_analysis_worksheet_former.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one<\/a> from the National Archives.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infographics are an excellent way to share information. Ask students to create infographics that display a timeline of Pearl Harbor events and statistics about the attack, such as the number of casualties, ships damaged, and the cost of the damage to infrastructure. Use Canva Infographic Creator (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Adobe Express Free Infographic Creator (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=20055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to design and share professional-style infographics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge students to write a persuasive essay discussing controversial topics related to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Include ideas such as \u201cWas the US prepared?\u201d and \u201cCould the attack have been prevented?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce a documentary video about Pearl Harbor using the tools available on Adobe Express Video Maker (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>). Encourage students to use built-in images, templates, and charts to share the details of the events and famous figures involved with Pearl Harbor.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The events at Pearl Harbor are similar to the more recent events of September 11, 2001. Offer students the opportunity to compare and contrast these events using a graphic organizer like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readwritethink.org\/sites\/default\/files\/CompareContrast.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one<\/a> from Read Write Think (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=4969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), or use the Circly App (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to create visuals to demonstrate more complex comparisons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources for Students <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you select your choice board activities, provide students with different types of resources such as primary source documents, videos, and news articles that they can use to research the events at Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watch this <a href=\"https:\/\/americanveteranscenter.org\/2018\/06\/lou-conter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video interview<\/a> with Lou Conter, the last Pearl Harbor survivor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the iCivics (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) game <em>Executive Command<\/em> to help students understand the complex and vital decisions made daily by the president. This game also emphasizes the value of diplomacy as part of crisis negotiations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/dam\/museums\/nmusn\/PDFs\/Education\/What%20Happened%20at%20Pearl%20Harbor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What Happened at Pearl Harbor<\/a>\u201d is a PDF document with a map and timeline of events. It also includes short stories about three Pearl Harbor heroes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/spectopics\/pearlharborandworldwarii.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TeachersFirst special topics collection<\/a> about Pearl Harbor and World War II includes resources, like lesson plans, photos, and audio recordings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Short History of\u2026<\/em> podcast (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=20436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) offers three episodes that discuss the events of Pearl Harbor. Hear about their path to Pearl Harbor, how they were caught by surprise, and what happened as the first wave of Japanese bombers arrived at the port.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit the National Park Service&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/perl\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pearl Harbor National Memorial<\/a> website to explore the history and stories of sacrifice and courage from members of the community who experienced this event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilderlehrman.org\/history-resources\/online-exhibitions\/attack-pearl-harbor-map-based-exhibition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Attack on Pearl Harbor: A Map-based Exhibition<\/em><\/a> from the Gilder Lehman Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=20022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) is an interactive guide to the Japanese attack and its aftermath.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notebook LM (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=20373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) is a new AI research and note-taking tool from Google that creates resources using your links, documents, and text.
