Lots of irresistible issues were hidden under beds or between the covers of textbooks. Many comic books were banned because of their ephemeral nature, graphical format, and often mature and violent content. Think of those lurid covers featuring a scantily-clad, buxom girl in the clutches of the super villain or monster. To avoid censorship, the Comic Magazine Association of America responded by establishing and imposing <a href=\"http:\/\/cbldf.org\/resources\/history-of-comics-censorship\/history-of-comics-censorship-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Comics Code Authority in 1954 that sanitized the content of comics for years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Children and teens continue to be drawn to colorful, vibrant books full of pictures but having limited text. Today comic books and their longer-format cousins, graphic novels, are considered art forms as well as legitimate literary works. Although kids might think anything with pictures is either a comic book or a graphic novel, The Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), gives <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/publications-resources\/book-lists\/graphicnovels2016.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this definition of the graphic novel<\/a> &#8220;as a full-length story told in paneled, sequential, graphic format. The list does not include book-length collections of comic strips, wordless picture books, or hybrid books that are a mixture of traditional text and comics\/graphics.&#8221; This cool <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.lib.uchicago.edu\/c.php?g=298172&amp;p=1989164.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">infographic<\/a>, \u00a0featured in the University of Chicago Library\u2019s research guide on comic books and graphic novels, visually explains the difference between the two. Your students may mention reading manga, originally Japanese graphic books, and anime, which is Japanese animation. Learn more about the different sub-genres in this <a href=\"https:\/\/rhapsodyinbooks.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/21\/graphic-novels-versus-comic-books-versus-manga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rhapsody in Books post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Comic books and their graphic novel cousins joined the mainstream in the 1980s with the Pulitzer Prize-winning title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lambiek.net\/artists\/s\/spiegelman.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maus<\/a> about the Holocaust by cartoonist Art Spiegelman. S.<\/p>\n<p>Why not use this burgeoning literary form to entice your students to read and perhaps create their own art works? Want to start a graphic novel collection in your school library or classroom? To peak interest, combine the American Library Association\u2019s late September\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bannedbooksweek.org\/node\/12963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Banned Books Week, Celebrating the Freedom to Read<\/a>\u00a0and resources for both graphic novels and comics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Places to explore graphic novels as a way to spark student interest in reading:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TeachersFirst is a great place to begin exploring this specially selected<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/spectopics\/comics.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> collection of websites on comics, cartooning and graphic novels.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For background and history of comic and graphic novels, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/cbldf.org\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comic Book Legal Defense Fund<\/a>, an organization devoted to fighting censorship of comics.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freecomicbookday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The National Free Comic Book Day<\/a>\u00a0is in May, but some stores <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halloweencomicfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">celebrate Halloween by giving away titles with scary horror themes.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Young Adult Library Association, a division of the ALA, each year\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/yalsa\/great-graphic-novels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlights the Great Graphic Novels for Teens.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Another ALA List for younger teens is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilovelibraries.org\/article\/best-graphic-novels-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Love Libraries Best Graphic Novels for Grades K-8<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For K-9 classrooms, The ALA\u2019s Association for Library Services to Children has created handy<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/publications-resources\/book-lists\/graphicnovels2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> flyers of Graphic Novels Reading Lists.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Parent Map blog suggests\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parentmap.com\/article\/best-children-books-graphic-novels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">43 graphic novel<\/a>s for an age range of toddlers to teens.<\/li>\n<li>School Library Journal offers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2011\/07\/collection-development\/comic-relief-thirty-nine-graphic-novels-that-kids-cant-resist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a selection of 39 titles for grades K-10<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Graphic Novel Reporter has reviews and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphicnovelreporter.com\/core-lists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> lists of core collections<\/a>\u00a0for all age levels.<\/li>\n<li>Keep up with comic books, manga, anime, and graphic novels with this book review site founded by a librarian, <a href=\"http:\/\/noflyingnotights.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No Flying No Tights.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Classroom Activity Ideas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use graphic novels to read about and study important topics, such as John Lewis\u2019 March, an award-winning graphic novel about the Civil Rights Movement.
