That is the idea behind the one word project. Choosing one powerful word that resonates with you and your goals to direct you through the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/nowsparkcreativity.com\/2023\/12\/start-the-new-year-with-one-word-projects.html\">one word project<\/a> is an amazing SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) activity that introduces an alternative to New Year&#8217;s resolutions in your classroom. Choosing one word to govern your new year is much easier and healthier than choosing one or two long and particular goals for the year. According to research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/news\/new-years-resolutions-why-do-we-give-up-on-them-so-quickly#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt's%20easy%20to%20set%20a,two%20weeks%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Shah.\">88% of people<\/a> give up on their New Year&#8217;s resolutions within two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2024_DEC_17_One_Word_Project_New_Years_Silva.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2024_DEC_17_One_Word_Project_New_Years_Silva-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2024_DEC_17_One_Word_Project_New_Years_Silva-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2024_DEC_17_One_Word_Project_New_Years_Silva-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2024_DEC_17_One_Word_Project_New_Years_Silva.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/customteachingsolutions.com\/the-power-of-having-your-students-choose-their-one-word-for-the-year\/\">Why one word<\/a>? Setting one word as your intention for the year guides you toward the actions, mindset, and overall goal you want to achieve. You can implement his project with any age group from <a href=\"https:\/\/thefirstgraderoundup.com\/new-years-one-word\/\">elementary<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/mrsbeers.com\/one-word-for-the-new-year\/\">middle school<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/tech-empoweredteacher.com\/2022\/01\/01\/vision-boards-and-one-word-goals-to-kick-start-the-new-year\/\">high school<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mylifejam.com\/2023\/11\/one-word-resolution\/\">beyond<\/a> (self-care teacher professional development activity). You can accomplish the one-word project through multiple engaging approaches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/sweetnsauerfirsties.com\/2022\/09\/13\/word-of-the-year-a-new-years-goal-setting-activity\/\">connect it to a book<\/a>, make an <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1M9Vc6tb87rhm9A_avvoKeknpWMOrPe0-nbGEgPKlJO0\/edit?usp=sharing\">artistic display<\/a>, or turn it into a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/n7SkU8GsNf4?si=Mn1YZlUFlqnGs-yN\">technology lesson<\/a>. Numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/jenkimbrell.com\/one-word-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one word project<\/a> resources and <a href=\"https:\/\/litinfocus.com\/one-word-project-activities-and-examples-for-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">step-by-step<\/a> lesson <a href=\"https:\/\/azpbs.org\/2024\/01\/one-word-new-year-goal-setting-activity-for-students\/\">plans<\/a> are also available <a href=\"https:\/\/goopenva.org\/courseware\/lesson\/3537\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for educators<\/a>. There are also many ways to complete the activity, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/16RUr-CMEghKDAXtqBCbFZiYt2xrjYcDHZs0r5q7SWag\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hyperdocs<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polishedhabitat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/One-Word-Worksheet-Updated.jpg\">worksheets<\/a>. You could even turn it into an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulsparklettes.com\/word-of-the-year-for-kids-sparkleschooling-style\/\">art project<\/a>, or if you have access to a 3D printer, implement a maker project by having students design their one word in Tinkercad and 3D print them. My students use <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/drawings\/d\/1QdvKbZgs78FDOLwvI8dL3_elrvdnKSQdL6Z1ELPhkq0\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Drawings<\/a> to create inspiration pictures they can hang in their own space. First, we discuss what the one word project is all about. Next, they brainstorm their word of the year (I start the brainstorming section with this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8UIrRd2K3_I?si=SV5QfVroAawirhKg\">video<\/a>). Finally, my students search for quotes and pictures related to their words and produce an inspiration picture (example below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/One-Word-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/One-Word-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/One-Word-2021.jpg 960w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/One-Word-2021-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/One-Word-2021-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Implement the one word project alone, with fellow teachers, or with your students for an inspirational guide through 2024.
