Let\u2019s explore three ways of intentionally building authentic teacher-student relationships in virtual learning environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Build Relationships in Virtual Classrooms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Digital Check-Ins<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Showing students that you care about how they\u2019re doing can be challenging, especially without quick hellos in the hallway during class change or side conversations when starting or ending school. Use Google Forms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Microsoft Forms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to create a way for students to check in with you digitally. Offer a brief set of questions that allow students to share and to ask for help if needed, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-list\">\n<li>How are you feeling today?&nbsp; \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> &nbsp; 1 &#8211; I\u2019m great!&nbsp; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 2 &#8211; I\u2019m okay.&nbsp; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 3 &#8211; I\u2019m meh.&nbsp; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp; 4 &#8211; I\u2019m struggling.&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please share anything you feel is important for your teachers to know so they can best support you. Consider adding the link to your email signature and in newsletters so it\u2019s easily accessible to students at any time and be sure to schedule time to follow up with students in need of support. Consider sending a quick check-in email or text to students who seem to be doing well to build those relationships as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Multimedia Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leverage technology when communicating with students to show them their teacher is a real human behind the screen, not just a chatbot! Ensure your communication is regular and consistent so your students see you as a reliable resource.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Video<\/strong> allow students to see your face and hear from you asynchronously. Use recording tools such as Screencastify (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), Loom (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), or Screenpal (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=9564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to introduce a unit, review important assignment directions, give class updates, or share a \u201cmorning message.\u201d When making videos, consider the essential elements of a teacher-student relationship identified by <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.3102\/003465430298563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cornellius-White in 2007<\/a>: teacher empathy and understanding, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When in a virtual environment, students complete most of their work asynchronously. A <strong>newsletter<\/strong> is a crucial anchor point that helps students stay on pace and receive important \u201cjust-in-time\u201d assignment directions. Consider using Smore (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=13334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) (particularly if you need translation features) or a design tool such as Adobe Express for Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Canva for Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>), both of which have a variety of customizable templates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Personal Branding\/Customization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there are no classroom walls or bulletin boards to decorate, teachers can still express their personalities. For example, in Canva for Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15329\">reviewed here<\/a>), you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/learn\/how-to-build-a-brand-kit\/#build-a-brand-kit-in-canva\">set up a Brand Kit<\/a> of colors, fonts, and images to easily access when creating new designs. Your school may have existing guidelines, but if not, consider establishing your own digital presence. Using consistent colors and fonts helps students tie communications and resources to you as the teacher and builds a memorable connection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building strong teacher-student relationships in a virtual learning environment is essential for student success.
