\"\"<\/a>Today is <\/span>Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0Those arranging and participating in \u201cGirl\u2019s Day\u201d activities are helping us to close <\/span>the science gap<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>SheHeroes<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>reviewed here<\/span><\/a>) is an organization that believes young girls should be encouraged to pursue non-traditional STEM based careers. Be sure to check out their resources as you plan for participating in \u201cGirl\u2019s Day\u201d as part of <\/span>National Engineers Week<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span>As we introduce even our youngest learners to engineering<\/span><\/a>, it is important to come to a common understanding of both <\/span>the Engineering Design Process<\/span><\/a> and how it differs from <\/span>Design Thinking<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Science Buddies<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>reviewed here<\/span><\/a>) outlines the the following steps in the Engineering Design Process:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Define the Problem<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Do Background Research<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Specify Requirements<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Brainstorm Solutions<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Choose the Best Solution<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Do Development Work<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Build a Prototype<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Test and Redesign<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For younger children, teachers might consider using the <\/span>five steps<\/span><\/a> outlined by the Boston Museum of Science <\/span>Engineering is Elementary<\/span><\/a> project (<\/span>reviewed here<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    J Edwards<\/span><\/a>, an engineer turned teacher, makes a great distinction between the Engineering Design Process and Design Thinking. <\/span>Engineering Design<\/i><\/b> relies heavily on math, begins with understanding customer constraints and budgets and asks the designer to \u201cprove\u201d that their design is the best. \u00a0<\/span>Design Thinking<\/i><\/b>, on the other hand, is focused on solving problems for people, exploring possibilities without constraints and showing what you\u2019ve designed. \u00a0While many teachers may have thought that the two were very similar and maybe even interchangeable, there\u2019s a real difference. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
