{"id":1518,"date":"2018-04-11T07:30:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-11T12:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/?p=1518"},"modified":"2019-04-05T17:41:36","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T21:41:36","slug":"lets-continue-the-conversation-virtual-collaboration-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/2018\/04\/lets-continue-the-conversation-virtual-collaboration-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Continue the Conversation: Virtual Collaboration in the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-APR-Social-Learning-Post-Template.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1552\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-APR-Social-Learning-Post-Template-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-APR-Social-Learning-Post-Template-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-APR-Social-Learning-Post-Template-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-APR-Social-Learning-Post-Template.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>If you caught last Thursday&#8217;s bi-weekly OK2Ask Twitter Chat (see the archive <a href=\"http:\/\/tweetchat.com\/favepage\/SFLOK2Ask\/ok2ask\/04-05-2018\/\">here<\/a>), you know we chatted all things virtual collaboration.\u00a0 Let\u2019s delve a little deeper into this topic and continue the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless if you\u2019re a new or seasoned educator, you\u2019ve surely been bombarded with the importance of a collaborative learning space.\u00a0 Collaboration is key to building students\u2019 21st-century learning skills and of course it\u2019s a part of the 4Cs (<em>collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking<\/em>).\u00a0 However, now in the digital age, we see collaboration morphing into virtual collaboration.\u00a0 What\u2019s the difference you ask?\u00a0 It\u2019s simple\u2026 virtual collaboration is working with someone while integrating technology.\u00a0 Team members are <em>virtual<\/em> team members.\u00a0 While I believe a balance of the two is ideal, today\u2019s post is going to center around the benefits of a virtually collaborative classroom.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re beginning this journey, or even just looking for new and fresh ideas, I like the goal shared in an Edutopia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/collaborative-learning-spaces-connect-to-world-jennifer-williams-fran-siracusa\">article<\/a> to connect physical and virtual learning spaces.<\/p>\n<p>If this goal is met, teaching and learning will truly be taken to the next level.\u00a0 Let\u2019s aim for real-world connections, global learning, and authentic learning opportunities, all while being aligned to the standards and curriculum.\u00a0 Easier said than done, I know, but here are a few things to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reflect back on the impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/an-introduction-to-the-social-learning-theory\/\">social learning theory<\/a>\u2026 relationships are key, and we learn from our interactions with each other.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself, \u201cam I promoting my students\u2019 social and emotional development and equipping them with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.p21.org\/our-work\/p21-framework\">21st-century learning skills<\/a> necessary for their futures\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>Student collaboration is natural and technology is a logical and generationally relevant way to facilitate it. Why not make learning meaningful to your digital age student and who knows\u2014maybe the conversation will continue outside of the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>Tracking communication and providing feedback can be easier and quicker\u2014let\u2019s work smarter, not harder, right?<\/li>\n<li>Why not create global education opportunities?
