{"id":1561,"date":"2018-05-09T07:30:04","date_gmt":"2018-05-09T12:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/?p=1561"},"modified":"2018-05-08T10:27:07","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T15:27:07","slug":"school-culture-and-climate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/2018\/05\/school-culture-and-climate\/","title":{"rendered":"School Culture and Climate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-MAY-School-Culture-and-Climate.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1587\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-MAY-School-Culture-and-Climate-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-MAY-School-Culture-and-Climate-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-MAY-School-Culture-and-Climate-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-MAY-School-Culture-and-Climate.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School culture and climate is a passion of mine\u2014 I find the topic interesting, and there are so many different ideas, philosophies, tips, articles, books, blogs\u2014you get the point. \u00a0I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">truly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoy reading them all and taking little bits and pieces with me to create my vision for leadership. \u00a0I think most everyone out there realizes culture and climate are critical components of a school environment, but how to achieve it is another thing altogether. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is hard! \u00a0As a teacher, I was lucky to teach in a school for seven years that had a great school culture. \u00a0We were valued as educators, the energy was generally positive, and the staff was filled with problem solvers and visionaries. \u00a0We all had our bad days, but overall our administration and staff worked hard to create a culture of acceptance, collaboration, and passion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0But, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how did they do it? \u00a0How did they get a majority of the staff to \u201cbuy in\u201d to the shared vision of the school? \u00a0I\u2019ve come to realize over the years that it is a slow process and there is no magic equation. \u00a0Additionally, many fluid factors can impact school culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been reading a blog post by Jimmy Casas, whom I was first introduced to at a conference quite a few years ago. \u00a0A former principal, he shares many good nuggets about school culture (find his new book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Culturize-Every-Student-Whatever-Takes\/dp\/1946444464\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1524665869&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=culturize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0I recently saw a quote from the book on Twitter that stuck out at: \u201cFor those who wish to leave a lasting impact on others be prepared to share two of life\u2019s most precious commodities with them. The gift of time &amp; the gift of love. They will forever be grateful&#8230;.\u201d \u00a0The reason I like this quote is that there are SO many new initiatives, best practices, suggestions about how to manage schools, fostering collaboration, and personalizing learning. I could go on and on. At the heart of it all, however, no matter what task you are trying to complete, is time and love. \u00a0I believe that approaching situations with these two things in mind will eventually lead to a transformation in school culture and climate for the better.
