It seems like a strange event to celebrate, but the creators believe that we use them every day, so it is worthy of an annual celebration. In fact, they chose this particular date because it is what originally appeared on the calendar emoji &#x1f5d3; symbolizing the date that iCal for Macs was first announced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emoji\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defines emojis as ideograms and smileys &#x1f600; used in electronic messages and web pages. The use of emojis began in Japan in 1999 as a feature included on mobile phones. In 2010 emojis were included on worldwide operating systems and their popularity continues to soar &#x1f525;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-JUL-World-Emoji-Day.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1733\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-JUL-World-Emoji-Day-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-JUL-World-Emoji-Day-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-JUL-World-Emoji-Day-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-JUL-World-Emoji-Day.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Depending on where and how emojis are used, some people believe<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/08\/14\/using-emojis-makes-people-think-incompetent-research-finds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the use of emojis makes you seem incompetent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#x1f92a; while others think<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologistworld.com\/emotion\/emoticons-emojis-emotion-psychology\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using emojis helps us communicate feelings more clearly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and convey sentiment without having to choose specific words &#x1f44c;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how you feel &#x1f630;, students use emojis every day in their conversations with others and are very familiar with communicating this way. If you need a quick lesson on the meaning of individual emojis, try searching<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emojipedia.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emojipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn what different emojis mean and to find the latest news and discussions centered around emojis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick Google search &#x1f50d; finds many different ideas for incorporating emojis into classroom lessons in all different subjects. When used correctly, these ideas allow us to include current culture in any lesson and appeal to student interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of my favorite &#x1f60d; <\/span><b>emoji resources and activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill Nye, the Science Guy, has a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PGRRXKek8G0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube explanation of evolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using emojis. Find other videos at<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/emojiscience.com\/post\/134986002510\/use-your-cerebrum-to-solve-this-brain-teaser\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EmojiScience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including How You Dream and emoji brain teasers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emojitranslate.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EmojiTranslate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; type in any text and the translator converts it into emojis. This site also translates into many different languages and offers users a choice of characters to use with their emoji<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create your own emoji with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitmoji.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitmoji<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18049\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; have students create and use Bitmojis to share reactions to literature, science experiments, and with any written response.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t familiar with how to create<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarammartin.com\/booksnaps-snapping-for-learning\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookSnaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using Bitmojis and the SnapChat app, learn more about it here.
