Using this year\u2019s theme, we can help our students to pick up a book and read for pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst has a number of resources to help you and your teens choose books to read:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.togetheread.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TogetheRead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a thematic collection of book titles and activities. \u00a0Every month has a different theme with suggested reading materials for all age groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst Reading Selections makes<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggestions for both recreational and academic reading. \u00a0Every grade level has its own list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=32\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Flight and Things that Fly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &amp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Solar System and Space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both have suggestions that pair well with this year\u2019s Teen Read Week theme. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen Read Week is a great time to introduce our networked teens to social ways to enjoy books. Here are a few ideas on how you could do this: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodreads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=9554\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) allows teens to build virtual bookshelves to display books that they have read or want to read. \u00a0Students can review books after reading, and read the reviews of those who have an interest in the same genres to find their next book. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/litpick.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LitPick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15045\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) allows a teacher to sponsor a group of student reviewers. \u00a0Students get free copies of books in exchange for honest reviews. \u00a0Students can earn point and badges, enter contests and might get their reviewed featured in the site\u2019s newsletter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are hesitant to have your students engage openly on social media, perhaps you could set up a class <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siftr.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siftr <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16699\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) activity similar to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siftr.org\/mgreads\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Have students take pictures of the places that they read and add a pin with their photo on the map. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A class <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flipgrid.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flipgrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17677\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is another option for a social experience within a \u201cwalled garden.\u201d \u00a0You might try something like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admin.flipgrid.com\/manage\/discovery\/464&amp;grade_levels=3&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee Table Book Talks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admin.flipgrid.com\/manage\/discovery\/1771&amp;grade_levels=3&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book Club Vlogs<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond book discussion and review, you can show students how to use media to share about what they have read. \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/animoto.com\/business\/education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animoto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10388\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an easy way for students to make and share videos. \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bighugelabs.com\/education.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Huge Labs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=12376\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) allows students to create motivational and movie posters, as well as magazine, covers so they can share what the book meant to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do your students choose books or share what they have read?
