One day of the week is set aside as Invite Parents to School Day, also known as National Parent Involvement Day. This annual event offers the opportunity to spotlight the importance of parent involvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parent involvement occurs in many different forms both in school and at home. Research verifies that students whose parents are involved are more likely to be successful both academically and socially. As educators, it is in our best interest to encourage and promote parent involvement in our schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of TeachersFirst\u2019s recent bi-weekly Twitter chats offered many ideas and suggestions for parent communication. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wke.lt\/w\/s\/WdOEoV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archive of the chat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains the complete hour-long discussion, including many thoughtful tips and technology ideas for embracing parents in your classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the ideas shared during the Twitter Chat along with some additional suggestions for using them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Class website or blog <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; use your website or blog to share homework assignments, important events, pictures of student projects, and more. Think of your site as the window into your classroom. Be consistent with updating information so that parents know that it is a reliable resource for the very latest classroom events. Don\u2019t forget to include contact information for parents to reach out to you.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webnode.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Webnode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15467\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a free website maker that includes many free tools and templates for designing professional-looking websites in minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edublogs.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edublogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=13449\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) includes blogging tools for teachers, students, and entire campuses. This ad-free and student safe environment is perfect for use with all grade levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classdojo.com\/\"><b>ClassDojo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=13249\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) connects schools with home through sharing student portfolios, classroom announcements, and videos. One major feature of this site is the automatic creation of student behavior reports with weekly summaries emailed to parents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.remind.com\/\"><b>Remind<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=12896\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a safe and secure text and email service. Use Remind to send reminders of upcoming field trips, project due dates, conferences, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomz.net\/\"><b>Bloomz<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16744\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a tool for sharing classroom communication and coordination. It also includes features to sign up for conference times and volunteer opportunities. Parents who don\u2019t sign up receive email updates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmodo.com\/\"><b>Edmodo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10606\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an all-in-one classroom tool that includes a mobile app for parent updates. Use Edmodo to find and share lessons, grade assignments, and post your calendar of events.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/classroom.google.com\/\"><b>Google Classroom<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18001\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK2Ask archived session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) makes it easy to manage your entire classroom from anywhere. Use Google Classroom to email parents and caregivers directly with a summary of their student\u2019s work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/?lang=en\"><b>Twitter<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=11537\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an excellent way to communicate with parents and the community. Create a personal hashtag for your classroom to make it easy to find all Tweets. Encourage parents and students to share ideas, pictures, and videos of class events, and send reminders on Twitter. Check out this<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/spectopics\/twitterforteachers.cfm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst Special Topics page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with several different resources and suggestions for using Twitter in the classroom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/\"><b>Padlet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may at first seem like an unlikely communication tool; however, it offers many different features to involve parents in your classroom. When sharing Padlets with student-created projects, turn on the commenting feature and encourage parents to share their thoughts and congratulations on student accomplishments. Create a Padlet just for parents that includes parent information and resources. Take a look at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/tianka_sheard\/pvmsparentspadlet\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> created just for parents that shares videos to review with students, online textbook logins, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Twitter Chat several educators also offered sound advice for parent\/teacher communication:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take advantage of the many available tech tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make it convenient for parents to access information in the way and time that best suits them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be flexible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and differentiate based on the needs and preferences of parents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although using technology is a great communication tool, <\/span><b>face to face discussions are best<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invite parents during holidays or special events (Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, holidays, plays) to <\/span><b>increase participation<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be proactive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not reactive. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u201creactive\u201d implies that you don\u2019t have the initiative. You let the events set the agenda&#8230; In a nutshell, being proactive is the same thing as being reactive. The only difference is: you do the reacting ahead of time.\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proactivechange.com\/reactive\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proactive Change<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proactive Coach<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Keep trying.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If one method doesn\u2019t work, try another. Parents appreciate the effort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be clear,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concise, and consistent<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encouraging strong parent participation in the classroom and at home is a win\/win situation for everyone.
