The Hour of Code&#x2122; is a nationwide initiative by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csedweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer Science Education Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. This annual event promotes increased access to computer science for all ages and genders. Even more importantly, participants are encouraged to have fun and develop an interest in computer science that takes them beyond the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a tech coach, it is probably up to you to introduce and prepare for Hour of Code&#x2122;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activities for your teachers. If you don\u2019t have a tech coach, this might be left up to you to develop or share with others. Either way, advanced planning is the key to a successful Hour of Code event, and sharing information with others helps build excitement and interest for all of you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t participated in this event, this is a great time to get started.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SrnvvWDm73k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This short video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers an excellent introduction to setting up Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in any environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SrnvvWDm73k\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some ideas to take you from start to finish with your Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0celebration:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Starting Now:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research coding activities for each grade level.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/content\/edge.cfm?c=29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst Coding resources<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include a wide variety of coding games and activities for grades K and up. One of my favorite sites for free lessons is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studio.code.org\/courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning tab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains courses for all ability levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluate the technology available to use. Are all devices working and prepared to handle your coding activities? Will all students have access to computers? Will the bandwidth in your school be strong enough to handle student needs? Not all Hour of Code&#x2122;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activities have to take place on computers so if these are problems, look at these<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hourofcode.com\/us\/learn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-tech alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared by Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consider having some of these activities prepared in case of an internet shut down during your Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider booking a speaker to discuss computer science with your students. If that isn\u2019t an option, find a motivational video to build student excitement. Share the video on your class or school webpage for parents to view too. Find an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/educate\/resources\/inspire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excellent selection of motivational videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to choose from on Code.org. Consider sharing a video each week during November as you prepare for your event.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recruit volunteers to help with student activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you on Twitter? Use social media like Twitter to share the date of your event, links to activities, and invite parents to participate. Share statistics on the importance of computer science and the benefits of choosing a career in STEM fields.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerscience.org\/careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ComputerScience.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great starting place to find career information. Don\u2019t forget to use your school or class hashtag along with #HourOfCode.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create certificates of completion to give to student participants. Make your own, or use<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/certificates\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these certificates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Code.org.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>During Your Event:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be prepared to handle problems that may arise with your equipment or internet disruptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it easy for students to access your Hour of Code&#x2122; activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have volunteers, organize them to work with specific groups of students or in defined areas as needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass out certificates to students at the end of the session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tweet during your activities to share student participation and successes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Post Hour of Code:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gather feedback on activities from participants and other teachers. What worked and what didn\u2019t work? Save notes for use during next year\u2019s Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0event.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect and share images on your website.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have students write thank you notes to volunteers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask students to reflect on the Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0experience. Use<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flipgrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flipgrid<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to create video student responses sharing their thoughts. Flipgrid offers a new feature called MixTapes; use this feature to put together a \u201cbest of the best\u201d of your video responses. Share this with your administrators as an excellent way to promote the success of your Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0event.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparation for this event is the key to success. Think about what you want to accomplish and what it will take to get it done now instead of waiting until the last minute. There are many online sources available to help you bring Hour of Code<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#x2122;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to all students and make it an Hour of Excellence!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We always love to hear from our readers.
