According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalinclusion.org\/definitions\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0&#8220;Digital Equity is a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. \u00a0Digital Equity is necessary for civic and cultural participation, employment, lifelong learning, and access to essential services.&#8221; In plain English from ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education), digital equity is equal access and opportunity to digital tools, resources, and services to increase digital knowledge, awareness, and skills. What does this mean for all of us as educators? For<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/explore\/articleDetail?articleid=654\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">educators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this means doing what you can to make sure students have equal access to devices, software, the internet, and assisting them in learning the proper use of these items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital equity is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techlearning.com\/tl-advisor-blog\/digital-equity-its-more-than-just-student-access\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not just all about the access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the short term, Digital equity has been shown to make it easier for students to complete homework, give them access to technology outside of school time, improve parent-teacher communication, and provide students with digital citizenship education. In the long term, we must remember that we are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/explore\/articleDetail?articleid=2279\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preparing our students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a future in which technology skills will play a large role, and digital equity will ensure that the entire future workforce is prepared to meet the future demand for technology skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many resources available for educators, schools, and districts looking to assist in bringing about digital equity in their communities. ESchool News recently published an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eschoolnews.com\/2018\/10\/17\/10-conversations-about-digital-equity\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ten examples and resources to address digital equity which include advice about going 1:1, home access gaps, and connecting students with digital resources during school breaks. COSN (Consortium for School Networking) produces a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cosn.org\/DEtoolkit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> digital equity initiative toolkit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that highlights district strategies to implement that will help students with internet access as well as community partnership suggestions. \u00a0Join a group working for digital equity, like ISTE&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/connect.iste.org\/communities\/community-home?CommunityKey=938df36f-3d52-4656-b1ed-937f7ca90b75\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Equity Network. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0Become a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everyoneon.org\/become-a-digital-equity-champion-dec\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Equity Champion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by working with Everyoneon. \u00a0Encourage your district to join the Future Ready Schools<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/futureready.org\/program-overview\/equity\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Equity Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0\u00a0Share resources with your students like community spaces that offer free internet access, devices, programs, and help like their public libraries. \u00a0Teach them<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.org\/education\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital literacy skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital equity is an issue that we as educators should all be concerned about.
