It is Digital Learning Day; you&#8217;ve planned your lessons and excitement is building for all of your well thought out activities implementing technology. You prepared carefully, making sure websites work, student passwords and logins are readily available, nothing is forgotten. Then what happens? The internet is down for the day, smart boards don\u2019t work, and your amazing plans won\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry, here are some quick and easy activities to teach digital learning all without needing the internet, electricity, or computers! Remember, according to the official<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitallearningday.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Learning Day site<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=14346\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;s not about technology, it&#8217;s about the learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common student interactions with digital information is through social media, so let&#8217;s focus on the proper use of social media content.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/lets-talk-about-social-media-practice-spaces\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruth Okoye\u2019s blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year shared a great deal of information on social media practice. In that blog, Ruth provided reasons for practicing the proper use of social media along with several ideas for no-tech practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, an<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tweetchat.com\/favepage\/SFLOK2Ask\/ok2ask\/12-06-2018\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK2Ask Tweet Chat<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from December 2018 shared many different strategies and resources for using social media. Scroll through the chat to find many different ideas for using social media in the classroom; several of those ideas work perfectly for a last-minute activity. My favorite idea from that chat is <\/span><b>paper blogging<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This activity is an excellent idea for making the most of last-minute technical issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tvstechtips.edublogs.org\/tag\/paper-blogging\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Karen Arrington sharing ideas for paper and table blogging &#8211; no tech required! Use ideas from this site to brainstorm ideas using paper or tables for upcoming student projects, outline ideas and content for future student blogs or podcasts, share social media tips or write a class round-robin story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pernillesripp.com\/2013\/09\/12\/paper-blogs-a-lesson-in-commenting-on-student-blogs\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog by Pernille Ripp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that shares ideas for teaching proper commenting through the use of paper blogs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theinspiredclassroom.com\/2012\/06\/making-paper-blogs-to-prepare-for-the-online-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Peterson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows how she introduced online blogging through paper blogs. Students went through the entire blogging process before publishing online. When finished, they were excited and prepared for their work to go online through practice and class discussions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some other <\/span><b>social media practice activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for you and your students to try:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create fictional Twitter profiles for story characters, people in history, or as a biography project. Download and print the template<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/creativeedtech.weebly.com\/blog\/fictional-twitter-profiles\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I know, that uses technology &#8211; hopefully you can do this before everything else goes down!).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tes.com\/teaching-resource\/blank-facebook-profile-worksheet-activity-6421841\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">printable Facebook template<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for students to create for any character. If needed, have students use this as a model to develop and produce a template of their design.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create centers labeled for different social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Use the table blogging idea to have students write and share thoughts on the proper use of each site. If your classroom isn\u2019t sharing through social media, ask students to write ideas on how to get started and what kind of information to share. Let them convince you that it would be a good idea!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe your classroom is looking a little lived-in by now. Take advantage of this time for students to create a bulletin board and door decorations with a social media theme. Pinterest has many examples, I\u2019ve collected a few for inspiration<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/shall85917\/paper-social-media\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a final activity, have students write a short tweet as an exit ticket then use those tweets as part of your classroom display.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers know that flexibility is essential, many times our best intentions get waylaid due to unforeseen circumstances. If this happens to you, shove that roadblock out of the way and keep moving on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you participate in Digital Learning Day?
