According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/articles\/what-is-media-literacy-and-why-is-it-important\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Common Sense Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and understand the messages they&#8217;re sending. \u00a0A more detailed definition of media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. \u00a0Whichever definition you choose, it is something you should be teaching in your classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching media literacy has many<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for students. Those benefits include learning how to think critically, the ability to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/news-is-it-real-or-is-it-fake-media-literacy-today\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differentiate between fake and real<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news, recognizing perspective and the message &#8220;behind&#8221; the message, and learning how to create media responsibly. When students are confident in these abilities they are better at research, writing, and communicating, all of which are vital skills for students today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporate media literacy throughout your curriculum<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a normal part of everyday activities, not as miscellaneous lessons. Incorporate<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frankwbaker.com\/mlc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that support and assist you in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mediaeducationlab.com\/curriculum\/materials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaching media literacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When using<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movies, T.V., or videos<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your class, use media literacy to get students to think critically about what they are watching. Make<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medialit.org\/sites\/default\/files\/14B_CCKQPoster+5essays.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media literacy questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a part of any lesson that includes any media to make analyzing media something that is inherent in students use of media. Allow students to play media<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/digital-media-literacy\/educational-games\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0literacy games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during class &#8220;downtime&#8221; or suggest them for resources for at home during vacations and breaks to keep the learning alive! \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Smarts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15361\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling as if you do not know enough about media literacy to incorporate it into your curriculum?
