Winter is over. Growing cycles are starting again here in North America. \u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the perfect time to celebrate with Mother Nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of reasons why students in school should be involved in gardening activities. \u00a0It fosters a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/llk.media.mit.edu\/courses\/readings\/maker-mindset.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maker Mindset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a bent towards innovation which asks \u201cwhat can I do with what I know.\u201d \u00a0Gardening at school is also a great STEM activity which has an added benefit of teaching life skills. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few of the objectives that students can work towards when gardening at school:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Science<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; using sensory observations to understand physical properties; understanding basic life needs and functional parts of plants; the effects of seasonal change on plants \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; can be used to collect and analyze data; communicate in a variety of ways including reaching out for expert advice and retelling the story of an event<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencebuddies.org\/science-fair-projects\/engineering-design-process\/engineering-design-process-steps\"><b>Engineering\/Design process<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; problem solving steps to design <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciese.org\/curriculum\/engineering\/garden.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gardening solutions<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Math<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; accurate measurement for planning when planting; collecting, understanding probability and statistics through analyzing and presenting growth data<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Life Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Environmental Responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; We\u2019ve all heard that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wyJp41VK6_k\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we need to save the bees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gardens provide a bee-friendly environment that all of our students can easily have a stake in creating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Patience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Part of gardening is waiting for things to grow. \u00a0You can\u2019t rush the process no matter what you try. Students will learn to anticipate their harvest while waiting for plants to mature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nutrition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Students who typically don\u2019t eat vegetables might agree to try them if it\u2019s something they\u2019ve grown with their own hands. \u00a0Who knows?
