How can we help our students navigate their way through it all?<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frankwbaker.com\/mlc\/advertising-lesson-plans\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Literacy lessons using advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are engaging, fun, and provide real-world experience. They can also prepare students to be better-informed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/explore\/In-the-classroom\/Use-ads-to-teach-media-literacy\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/5-steps-to-improve-your-media-literacy\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Literacy lessons about advertising can be incorporated into just about any subject from<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstladies.org\/curriculum\/curriculum.aspx?Curriculum=1748\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/artsedge.kennedy-center.org\/educators\/lessons\/grade-6-8\/Media_1_Basics\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eslbrains.com\/the-history-and-future-of-online-advertising\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpalms.org\/Public\/PreviewResourceLesson\/Preview\/30781\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/winners\/cellparts.cfm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humaneeducation.org\/blog\/2017\/6-activities-for-teaching-about-advertising\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything in between<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Advertising is aimed at children of all age levels. There are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleweb.com\/20198\/teach-media-literacy-super-bowl-ads\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commercials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on all the television and radio networks, ads in apps they are using on their tablets, ads in online videos they are watching; there are even sponsors advertised at events they attend. Advertising is not necessarily a bad thing &#8211; for example, it benefits the economy, it can help people find products they need, and it can be used to produce public service announcements. Our students must learn to be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermedialiteracy.com\/ideas\/analyzing-advertising\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical consumers of advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students in early elementary school can be taught to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tolerance.org\/classroom-resources\/tolerance-lessons\/advertisements-and-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyze online ads critically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Upper elementary students can be taught to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.org\/education\/lesson\/advertising-detectives-3-5\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differentiate between advertising content and general content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online. Middle school students can begin to be aware of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/teachers\/lesson-plans\/teaching-content\/pictures-and-slogans-persuade-audience\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persuasive techniques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/lessonplan\/advertising-all-around-us-lesson\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevalence of advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. High school students can study advertising in depth as a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cteonline.org\/curriculum\/lessonplan\/the-best-worst-of-public-relations-cte\/6GUHE5\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">career path<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mediaeducationlab.com\/stand-lesson-8-create-ad\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different types of ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An engaging way to introduce the subject is through interactive activities. Younger students can learn about food marketing through<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/game\/co-cos-adversmarts-interactive-unit-food-marketing-web\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-Co&#8217;s Adversmarts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an interactive unit which teaches students to recognize the marketing techniques used on commercial websites that target children, create a quick advertisement using the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.funenglishgames.com\/writinggames\/advertising.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertising game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or explore<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderremixer.com\/html5\/#\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender in advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=13807\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Federal Trade Commission developed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/games\/off-site\/youarehere\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> YouAreHere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10533\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to teach students to be smart consumers and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/admongo\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admongo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=11057\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to teach students about advertising in general. Both sites have components that can be used with older and younger students as well as lesson plans, handouts, and information for parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advertising is all around us. Let us strive to give our students the tools that they need to become critical consumers of advertisements.
