Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie\u2019s TED Talk, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Danger of a Single Story,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a shining explanation of why diversity in media is a must and why we must not rely on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schooljournalism.org\/encouraging-lightbulb-moments-single-stories-and-the-lack-of-diversity-in-the-media\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single perspectives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when creating our world view.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"max-width: 854px;\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As educators, we need to examine our social media use ourselves. The article<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eschoolnews.com\/2015\/10\/19\/diversity-social-media-269\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Is there enough diversity in your social media?&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discusses the fact that as many of us utilize social media more and more our views are getting less diverse as we are consuming information from people just like ourselves, meant for people just like ourselves. The ISTE standards encourage us all to be more aware and critical consumers of media as educators and students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity in media is essential for many<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/everythinggirlslove.com\/5-reasons-why-diversity-in-media-is-crucial\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the most important for our students is that in our increasingly global world, a narrow world view hinders them in their success in future endeavors in our global society. As educators, it is our responsibility to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.editmedia.org\/best-practices\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fairly and equitably engage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our students as well as expose them to diverse views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-JUL-Teaching-About-Diversity-in-Media.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2802 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-JUL-Teaching-About-Diversity-in-Media-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-JUL-Teaching-About-Diversity-in-Media-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-JUL-Teaching-About-Diversity-in-Media-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019-JUL-Teaching-About-Diversity-in-Media.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Lesson plans<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abound for teaching students about different topics related to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journalismethics.uark.edu\/lesson-plans\/diversity-in-the-media\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diversity in media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Topics in diversity on media are also diverse. They range from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humaneeducation.org\/blog\/2018\/humane-education-activities-missing-mainstream-media\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who is missing in mainstream media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ncte.org\/resources\/gender-representation-9-12\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender representation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tolerance.org\/magazine\/do-you-teach-about-ideological-diversity\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">political viewpoints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newseumed.org\/tools\/lesson-plan\/photo-ethics-diversity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> photo ethics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Broadcast Education Association provides an extensive list of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaweb.org\/wp\/?page_id=4643\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media diversity links<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students can also be challenged to provide solutions to global media literacy issues like the projects in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalmilhack.com\/finalists2018\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global media and information literacy hackathon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity in media is an issue that should be at the forefront in our classrooms as it is in the world today.
