As you think about getting this school year off the ground, take a moment to reflect and sift through your notes.\u00a0 Sometimes you can find themes that can help organize the great ideas that you have gathered. Perhaps you can use them to reinforce an instructional framework that you use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One framework that I really like is Michael Fullan\u2019s Deep Learning or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/118731640\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 6 Cs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With the goal of enabling educated people to be able to solve problems and \u201cdeal with life\u201d, these six skills (character education, citizenship, creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking) are crucial to education. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelfullan.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3897.Rich_Seam_web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that when technology is used to facilitate Deep Learning (or the 6Cs), the result transforms teaching and learning.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a moment to unpack these skills and look for strategies to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Character Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes the ideas of building resilience, empathy, confidence, and well being. Rather than making \u201ccharacter ed\u201d another subject to teach, there are several ways that these concepts can be included in everyday processes and procedures in the classroom.\u00a0 In a previous blog post, Katy Garvey suggested that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/win-with-civility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we use circles as a classroom routine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build relationships within the school community. Sharon Hall\u2019s post suggests that we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/what-will-your-legacy-be\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use the concept of legacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a catalyst for character discussions. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/students-create-end-of-year-legacy-now-maurice-elias\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edutopia article that I read recently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that students write their end-of-year legacy at the beginning of the year to help them with character goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Citizenship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this framework involves the notions of global knowledge, cultural respect, and environmental awareness.\u00a0 One way to approach this would be to help students understand the United Nations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.together2030.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/cafod_sdg_single.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SDGs) and\/or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/human-rights-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Rights Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are many suggested ideas and resources for teaching the SDGs at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachsdgs.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachSDGs website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I think one of the easiest strategies is to look at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org\/resources\/?_sft_resource_type=books-comics&amp;_sft_language=english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curated book list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and integrate a book or two into a lesson where appropriate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Communication skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defined as \u201cgetting students to apply their oral work, listening, writing, and reading in varied contexts\u201d are easy to encourage.\u00a0 Lesson ideas in this area are plentiful including, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/teaching-your-students-conversation-allen-mendler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching your students to have a conversation\u201d <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/teaching-communication-skills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching communication skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0 A wonderful tool for students to use to create projects that allow them to practice their communications skills is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sway.office.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Sway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is device agnostic and free.\u00a0 If you are not familiar with Sway, take a look at the archive for our <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sway Cool Student Projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> workshop. In the session, we shared how to create project ideas that help students practice communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designing and managing projects which address specific problems and arrive at solutions using appropriate and diverse tools is the essence of <\/span><b>Critical-Thinking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This idea is not new to you if you are familiar with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/whats-the-buzz-design-thinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. TeachersFirst has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/spectopics\/designthinking.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curated list of tech tools and websites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would be helpful as you plan lessons that include this type of critical-thinking in them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Collaboration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or working in teams so students can learn with\/from others is a strategy that most can agree is necessary for our students.\u00a0 One of my favorite tools for quick collaboration is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twiddla.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twiddla <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15079\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 Along with Google Docs Suite and Microsoft&#8217;s Office Online, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/edge.cfm?c=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a list of additional free tools that can be used to practice collaborative work strategies. Be sure to try the tools out with a friend before you use them with students.\u00a0 Many times you\u2019ll learn tips about collaborative work that your students might need to know in advance. One tip you may not know is that you shouldn&#8217;t \u201cundo\u201d when working collaboratively in a Google doc. It reverses what was last saved&#8230;which could be some other student&#8217;s work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing qualities like enterprise, leadership, innovation are part of <\/span><b>creativity and imagination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One strategy to promote these skills is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/conferences\/events\/vste-2019-roanoke\/vste19-makerspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including maker activities in your instruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
