Students must learn to create media responsibly. What does it mean to create media responsibly?<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/news-and-media-literacy\/what-is-media-literacy-and-why-is-it-important\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Common Sense Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, teaching media literacy helps students to &#8220;Create media responsibly (by) Recognizing your own point of view, saying what you want to say how you want to say it, and understanding that your messages have an impact is key to effective communication.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our increasingly global world, communication through the creation of media is a necessary skill. Students consume media on a daily basis. They should also be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/blog\/new-strategies-to-get-kids-to-create-media-not-just-consume-it\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encouraged to create<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it.\u00a0 There are many<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.creatingmedia.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lesson plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available for teachers to assist their students in<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdcda.org\/office\/girlsonlytoolkit\/toolkit\/got-15-media.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning to create media responsibly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are topic-specific lessons available for many topics like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gse.harvard.edu\/news\/uk\/18\/10\/toolkit-digital-civics\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schrockguide.net\/psa.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PSAs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativeeducator.tech4learning.com\/2012\/lessons\/Everyday_Heroes\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real word heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/global.digitalpromise.org\/360-story-lab\/my-world-360\/program-guide\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustainable development goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/literacyeducation.nd.edu\/blog\/high-impact-lesson-plans\/lessons-in-literacy-elvir\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/medill-media-innovation-entrepreneurship\/how-we-used-design-thinking-to-create-media-solutions-32e8c914dc04\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/student-created-videos-classroom\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/global_learning\/2016\/09\/five_steps_for_connecting_students_to_a_global_audience.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connecting to a global audience.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To ensure that students are creating media responsibly, they should use a tool like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schrockguide.net\/uploads\/3\/9\/2\/2\/392267\/fairuse1.jpg\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathy Schrock&#8217;s Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for School Projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure that they are creating media without plagiarising. Teachers should analyze and evaluate student-created media using a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/digital-media-literacy\/general-information\/digital-media-literacy-fundamentals\/media-literacy-fundamentals#assessing\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process like this one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Mediasmarts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many tools available for students to create media. Use the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/classroom_resources.cfm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst classroom resources search tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find specific tools. Students can create videos using<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/animoto.com\/business\/education\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animoto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.flipgrid.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flipgrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/toontastic.withgoogle.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toontastic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Create audio projects with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audacityteam.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audacity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/education-podcast\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podbean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/participate\/storycorps-app\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Storycorps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.duckduckmoose.com\/educational-iphone-itouch-apps-for-kids\/chatterpixkids\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chatterpix Kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can create mixed media projects using<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sway.office.com\/my\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapwing.com\/products\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kapwing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/class.animaker.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Animaker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wakelet.com\/home\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wakelet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/createtolearn.online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create to Learn Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an overall media educational media creation site that offers teaching resources, an online learning community for teachers, examples of student work, as well as links to free and low-cost digital tools to create nine types of media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall students must be allowed to create media to learn to create media responsibly. What better place to learn that than in your classroom?!? Be your students\u2019 guide in their journey to becoming media literate responsible consumers and creators of media.
