But I made it! Don\u2019t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.\u201d<br \/>\nMadam C. J. Walker<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you heard of Madam C. J. Walker? She is famous for being one of the first African-American female millionaires. With $1.25 to her name, she launched a line of hair products and straighteners known as \u201cMadam Walker\u2019s Wonderful Hair Grower.\u201d As her wealth grew, she began philanthropic outreach to the African-American community and encouraged political activism by her sales agents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madam C. J. Walker\u2019s story is a fascinating one, not only as a look into her journey as a businesswoman but also as an introspective look at the time in which she lived. She was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, on a Louisiana plantation to enslaved parents and died at her New York estate in 1919.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-DEC-History-thru-Powerful-Women.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3192\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-DEC-History-thru-Powerful-Women-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-DEC-History-thru-Powerful-Women-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-DEC-History-thru-Powerful-Women-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-DEC-History-thru-Powerful-Women.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>We have all heard of famous American women such as Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. However, there are many more stories of strong women, such as Madam Walker that aren\u2019t as well known. These are the tales that have the possibility to intrigue and inspire today\u2019s girls into making their dreams into reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several sites and organizations focus strictly on famous women and women\u2019s issues. These sites include legendary and everyday women heroes and serve as excellent resources not only for biographical purposes but also for historical perspective. In a blog a couple of years ago, I shared several resources for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/womens-equality-day\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Equality Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that includes several websites devoted to telling the stories of strong women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at some more sites devoted to famous and not-so-famous women:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/10\/11\/style\/this-is-18.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is 18 Around the World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18465\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; This New York Times interactive takes a look at what it is like to be an 18-year-old girl in 2018. Through images and short reflective writing, learn about life around the globe through girls\u2019 eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenwithaltitude.com.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women with Altitude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18340\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; Explore this interactive timeline to learn about women making significant achievements in the aviation industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/girlswhocode.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girls Who Code<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17573\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; The goal of this site is to close the gender gap in technology and encourage girls to enter the field of coding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/women.nasa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women@NASA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=12991\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; Take a look at the stunning videos and essays sharing the many contributions of women to NASA\u2019s success.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.nypl.org\/schomburg\/writers_aa19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African American Women Writers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=6147\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; This collection of works of African American Women Writers includes poetry, essays, and more from the 19th century.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Money, Money, Money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Although not devoted just to women, this page shares a list of books dedicated to economics and entrepreneurship, including several books focused on females.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having excellent resources is just a start. Incorporating them effectively into your curriculum is the end goal. Here are some ideas for incorporating stories of strong women to build understanding and knowledge of previous and current history:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help students understand the past by listening to music from the time. Use YouTube to find playlists from virtually anytime. For example, here is a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qDQpZT3GhDg\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playlist from the Harlem Renaissance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the 1920s. It is sure to get you and your students in the mood of the period.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a timeline tool that incorporates videos, images, and text to help students visualize the sequence of events for any period.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StoryMaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=14729\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) offers digital storytelling tools that build upon maps to create interactive stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask students to compare and contrast different events or people. For example, compare Madam C. J. Walker to Harriet Beecher Stowe using a Venn Diagram or Infographic to compare and contrast the different eras, their upbringing, and accomplishments.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15329\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) offers a wide variety of templates and tools for both Venn Diagrams and Infographics.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take advantage of historical map collections for use as primary sources to understand the physical layout of cities from the past to the present.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/maps\/collections\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Library of Congress Historic American Maps Collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=1744\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) provides an excellent starting point for research.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes well-known heroes seem larger than everyday life and not relatable to students. Take advantage of the many available primary sources to help students find heroes in all walks of life and all corners of the globe. Their experiences provide an opportunity to serve not only as inspiration but also as a framework for understanding and connecting on a personal level to events in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We would love to hear how you inspire your students with stories of powerful women.
