And, what can be more fun and a way to incorporate student voice than to teach students how to create their own primary sources documenting Thanksgiving in some way.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-NOV-Make-Primary-Sources-Thksgvg-Students.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3112\" src=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-NOV-Make-Primary-Sources-Thksgvg-Students-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-NOV-Make-Primary-Sources-Thksgvg-Students-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-NOV-Make-Primary-Sources-Thksgvg-Students-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-NOV-Make-Primary-Sources-Thksgvg-Students.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>One way to document Thanksgiving is to participate in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/participate\/the-great-thanksgiving-listen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Thanksgiving Listen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Great Thanksgiving Listen is a &#8221; national movement that empowers young people\u2014and people of all ages\u2014to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview with an elder, mentor, friend, or someone they admire using the free<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/participate\/storycorps-app\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StoryCorps App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thousands of students from all 50 states have participated in this event in the past, documenting more than 100,000 interviews. In addition to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/participate\/the-great-thanksgiving-listen\/for-educators\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lesson plans and handouts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, StoryCorps provides a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorpsorg-staging.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/The-Great-Thanksgiving-Listen-Toolkit-2019-11.5.19.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher toolkit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storycorpsorg-staging.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/TGTL2019-Placemat.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placemat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for use on the Thanksgiving dinner table with useful interview starters. PBS and NAIS provide<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ri.pbslearningmedia.org\/collection\/storycorps-the-great-thanksgiving-listen\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lesson plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nais.org\/learn\/independent-ideas\/november-2019\/the-power-of-storytelling\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tips on participation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If you do not have a device on which to download the StoryCorps app, there are other<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetech4teachers.com\/2019\/11\/three-tools-for-recording-great.html?utm_source=feedblitz&amp;utm_medium=FeedBlitzRss&amp;utm_campaign=freetech4teachers\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrapbookers have lots of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/katiethecreativelady.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/2\/documenting-thanksgiving\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great ideas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about documenting Thanksgiving!<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Taking pictures and journaling about them<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgalaxy.com\/journal\/2010\/1\/13\/the-ultimate-guide-to-digital-scrapbooking-for-educators.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digitally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/academic-scrapbooking-photographs-journals\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scrapbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some of the easiest and fun ways to document Thanksgiving.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thinglink.com\/marketing\/10-recent-thinglink-product-updates-for-teachers-and-schools?fbclid=IwAR3pVQTfqIkFrO4G6rdJhr89VvPylzK5p6u7ACLfYgtDtgmmzBueak4SBBY\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinglink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an excellent tool for doing this in the classroom. Check out this Oceanspray interactive Thanksgiving<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thinglink.com\/marketing\/thanksgiving-infographics\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infographic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made using Thinglink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wevideo.com\/blog\/news\/video-newsletter-a-cozy-time-for-reflection-with-wevideo-galleries-november-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another option. Assigning a Thanksgiving video idea from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/animoto.com\/blog\/personal\/family-together-thanksgiving-video\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animoto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or using<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.flipgrid.com\/news\/guestmode\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flipgrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have students video themselves or family discussing what they are thankful for or what Thanksgiving means to them are also ways to create Thanksgiving primary sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, this Thanksgiving, think out of the box. Have students use their voice to document Thanksgiving and make their own primary sources!
