The theme serves as a spotlight for historical issues and developments that are important for race relations in America.&nbsp; ASALH encourages those with interest in black history to use the month of February as a time to explore these issues of historical importance. This year, 2020, the theme is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asalh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2020Theme.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African American\u2019s and the Vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffrage, or the right to vote, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/comrades-in-conflict.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forbidden for African American men and all women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States until the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/15th-amendment\/introduction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15th Amendment to the US Constitution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave African American men the right to vote in 1870, and the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920.&nbsp; Even after these amendments were passed, many African Americans were unable to exercise this right until the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/voting-rights-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our students need to understand that voting is both a privilege and a responsibility. One way to help them learn about civic engagement is to study the lives of leaders, activists, and even every-day citizens who have made a difference.&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/reading-treks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeachersFirst Reading Treks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide lesson ideas and materials to guide classroom exploration into the lives of various people and the situations they find themselves in.&nbsp; As you plan for classroom investigations into African Americans and the vote, there are a few Reading Treks that might help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/reading-treks\/content\/around-america-win-vote-two-suffragists-kitten-and-10000-miles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around America to win the vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a whimsical story about the women\u2019s suffrage movement.&nbsp; At the elementary level, it will be a great way to begin discussions with students about the universal suffrage movement and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/black-women-and-the-fight-for-voting-rights.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plight of African American women in particular.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; Middle school students will relate to the first-person narrative in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/reading-treks\/content\/turning-15-road-freedom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seeing history through the eyes of a student will inspire them to stand up for what they believe and make their voices heard.
