This year\u2019s theme asks us to recognize the value of nurses. It\u2019s an incredibly timely and wonderful theme that encourages us to remember those who are on the front line as we navigate through our public health crises. One of the best ways that we can honor them is to practice physical distancing from others. That action can slow down the number of people who need care in medical facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Staying home with our families has its challenges &#8211; one of which is trying to find ways to remain connected with friends and extended family members. Those adults who can, work from home. They work in addition to trying to guide their children through some semblance of academic work. We\u2019ve increased our digital connections as we try to maintain relationships with those outside of our homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The increase in our technology use has brought to mind the need for digital self-regulation. During this time, we need to help our youngsters (and ourselves) strive for balance in our technology use. We need to keep our online time productive while not letting technology take over our lives. Maintaining a balance is especially hard when limiting our time out in the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here are a few tips to share with our young people to help with digital self-regulation:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Visual hygiene<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0helps to make sure that your eyes can work optimally without straining. It includes things like placing lighting above your workspace that focuses on the workspace without shining in your eyes. Keep text presented at a 20-degree angle and an\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/drboulet.com\/harmon-distance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">appropriate distance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Follow the 20\u201320\u201320 rule, taking a 20-second break from the screen every 20 minutes and looking at something 20 feet away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Currently, many students are in front of computers or tablets for prolonged periods as well. They may be doing schoolwork, video chatting, or creating their newest digital masterpiece. Encourage them to take a break every 30 minutes to relieve the strain on their eye and neck muscles. They can use\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/family.gonoodle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">GoNoodle<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) to lead them in a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/family.gonoodle.com\/activities\/take-on-the-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">focused breathing exercise<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0or have fun with the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gonoodle.com\/videos\/nYMpow\/squatchy-talk-chicken-dance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">chicken dance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Just a few minutes will help them to \u201cloosen up\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another aspect of digital self-regulation is<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0positive social media engagement<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Have young students watch\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpop.com\/socialstudies\/culture\/digitaletiquette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">BrainPop\u2019s Digital Etiquette video<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">). Discuss the video and follow up with a quiz or challenge to see how much of the content they remember. Students in middle school or above would benefit from working through a few modules from the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/socialmediatestdrive.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Social Media Test Drive<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.safekids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Safekids<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=8461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) offers a family contract for online safety that would make for a great family discussion prompt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A final concept in digital self-regulation is\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">screen-time balance<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3_U-E0W6Ht0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">iKeepSafe video\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">can help explain the concept and why it is important.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What materials do you use to discuss digital self-regulation?
