While the organizers are more concerned with the science behind vocal communication, there is an opportunity here to encourage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/wickedtech\/student-voice?authuser=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student voice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As educators, we can help students learn to contribute their values and perspectives to conversations as we teach and learn together. It is especially important to hear student voices during this current <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10215\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public health crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What better time to hear student voices than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/national-poetry-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Poetry Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? This month-long literary celebration reminds us of the role poetry plays in our culture. As our way of life shifts and changes as we deal with a worldwide crisis, poetry will help our global community to express the feelings and concerns of the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Poets suggests that we use this time to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/shelter-poems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelter in Poems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Find a poem that helps you find the strength and energy to maintain forward momentum as we limit our mobility, or perhaps one that helps you feel connected with others. Going through that exercise and sharing the poem would give both you and your students agency to express what&#8217;s happening to the world. Perhaps this is the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/poets.ca\/programs\/pocketpoem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poem that you keep in your pocket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on April 30th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your students may not be able to find a poem that adequately shares their voice. Help them share their perspective by writing poetry. Here are a few lesson ideas that would work well in the remote or standard classroom:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your students are just starting to write poetry, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/whats-the-buzz-instructional-scaffolding-for-technology-integrated-lessons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scaffold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their creative process. Use the videos of authors reading their own poetry at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowaterriver.com\/poetry-video-library\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Water River<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=14224\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to inspire your students. Allow them to use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poem-generator.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poem Generator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18552\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to write their first few poems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invite students to connect as a class by participating in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/teachers\/sponsored-content\/officedepotholidays\/17-18\/poetic-devices-scavenger-hunt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetic Devices Scavenger Hunt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18779\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siftr.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siftr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16699\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to allow students to see one another&#8217;s submissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help students understand how the new poetry inspired by current events will leave a lasting impression for generations to come. Use <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.civilwarpoetry.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poetry and Music of the War Between the States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=14398\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) as examples. Then host a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/powerpoetry.org\/poetry-slams\/slam-social-distancing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Distancing Poetry Slam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your class using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.flipgrid.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flipgrid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17677\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage students to create videos that pair imagery with the poem they have chosen. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/citing-media-sources-for-school-projects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Darshell Silva reminded us to make sure that students understand the need to provide attribution for their poems and the images. Use tools in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18395\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find copyright-friendly images for school projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What poem will you share to help your students feel connected?
