Our text this year is <\/span><b><i>Learning First, Technology Second<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ISTE, 2017) by Liz Kolb.\u00a0 I first learned of Dr. Kolb and her work with instructional technology through my work with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ISTE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Edtech Coaches PLN.\u00a0 Dr. Kolb was the featured author in a session hosted by the coaching group.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had worked with teachers for over a decade as a coach, trying to help teachers understand what \u201cgood\u201d instructional technology use was.\u00a0 Instructional goals and strategies vary significantly.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t a standard answer that I could give teachers when they asked why I would suggest different strategies for teachers who seemed to have the same goals in mind. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning First, Technology Second<\/span><\/i><b><i>,<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gave me the terms needed to better explain the nuances of technology implementation to the teachers I was supporting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book demystifies some assumptions that people make about using technology in the classroom:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engagement<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t really about the bells and whistles that software has. It\u2019s about scaffolding a student\u2019s focus on the given task and motivating the student to become an active learner. Used appropriately, technology we elect to use for engagement increases student time-on-task.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When instructional technology is chosen and implemented well in the classroom, it should enhance (or add value to) the learning experience. Students should be better able to understand concepts with the use of technology.\u00a0 The technology used should scaffold higher-order thinking that allows students to demonstrate their understanding in more sophisticated ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of technology should extend the student\u2019s skill set, giving them additional knowledge helpful in everyday life.\u00a0 Technology tools can also extend student learning by allowing students to learn outside of their typical classroom &#8211; different hours, from home, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology use should be coupled with research-informed strategies to make the most of instructional experience.\u00a0 Good teaching and learning is required to maximize student attainment of instructional goals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book can also help end the debate some educators have about how much technology is too much.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning First, Technology Second <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps us to understand that unless the technology is coupled with good instructional strategies, it should not be used in the classroom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you determine what proper technology implementation includes?\u00a0 Do you use a particular framework?\u00a0 Let us know in the comments below!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week we started the TeachersFirst\u00ae&#xfe0f; summer book study.
