What happens when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2020\/07\/01\/as-covid-19-budget-cuts-loom-relevance-of.html\">schools go virtual<\/a>? School Librarians <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/aasl\/sites\/ala.org.aasl\/files\/content\/advocacy\/SchoolLibrarianRolePandemic_Resources_Chart_200713.pdf\">step up<\/a>! <a href=\"http:\/\/littlelibraryoflearning.com\/2020\/05\/24\/distance-learning-or-home-schooling-how-libraries-can-help\/\">How<\/a> can you as a School Librarian step up your <a href=\"https:\/\/aasl.digitellinc.com\/aasl\/sessions\/3622\/view\">virtual learning<\/a> game? Besides staying abreast of school library <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgequest.aasl.org\/tag\/pandemic-resource\/\">news<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/neverendingsearch\/\">blogs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysut.org\/news\/2020\/may\/school-librarians\">staying connected<\/a> with your school community is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascd.org\/publications\/educational-leadership\/feb19\/vol76\/num05\/The-School-Librarian@-Your-Ultimate-Digital-Resource.aspx\">fundamental<\/a>. School Librarians are setting up <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/neverendingsearch\/2020\/05\/14\/creating-your-virtual-library-quickly-using-slides-and-bitmojis\/\">virtual libraries<\/a> using a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/natlib.govt.nz\/schools\/school-libraries\/library-services-for-teaching-and-learning\/your-school-library-online\/creating-a-virtual-school-library\">methods<\/a>. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=video-school-librarian-panel-discusses-using-virtual-meeting-tools-to-connect-students-coronavirus-COVID-19\">connecting<\/a> with students, <a href=\"https:\/\/cooltoolsforschool.net\/curation-tools\/\">curating<\/a> resources, <a href=\"https:\/\/aasl.digitellinc.com\/aasl\/sessions\/1704\/view\">promoting reading<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=School-public-library-partnerships-gain-strength-during-pandemic-COVID-19-distance-learning\">partnering<\/a> with public libraries,\u00a0 keeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mackincommunity.com\/2020\/05\/04\/making-a-maker-culture-while-distance-learning\/\">maker culture<\/a> alive, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduscapes.com\/sessions\/bestofweb2\/index.htm#3\">collaborating<\/a> with teachers. The versatility of curation tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wakelet.com\/2019\/02\/19\/use-wakelet-libraries\/\">Wakelet<\/a> allows<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DAFrtq6tNI8\"> School Librarians<\/a> to do much more than post lists of resources, enabling them to create library newsletters, digital stories, and student<a href=\"https:\/\/wakelet.com\/wake\/28925a31-0290-4a13-b49e-c57332a81279\"> reading journals<\/a>. School Librarians are virtually encouraging reading in a variety of ways like promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=10-ways-to-promote-ebooks-and-audiobooks-to-k-12-students-coronavirus-covid-19-home-remote-virtual-schooling\">ebooks\/audiobook<\/a>s,\u00a0 virtual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drscavanaugh.org\/booktalk\/online_booktalks.htm\">book talks<\/a>, running <a href=\"https:\/\/vanmeterlibraryvoice.blogspot.com\/2020\/05\/bring-virtual-book-clubs-to-your.html\">virtual book clubs<\/a>, doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/reading-treks\/\">reading treks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookcreator.com\/remote-learning\/teachers\/\">creating books<\/a> with students and teachers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/teachers\/blog-posts\/alycia-zimmerman\/booktalks-book-trailers-and-book-teasers\/\">creating<\/a> trailers, book talks, and teasers of their own and with their students.<\/p>\n<p>Along with providing library services virtually school librarians are of course <a href=\"https:\/\/mrsjinthelibrary.com\/2020\/03\/13\/remote-learning-library-activities\/\">teaching<\/a> remotely using a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=for-learning-in-age-of-COVID-digital-resources-recommended-by-librarians-coronavirus-covid19\">resources<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=VIDEO-librarians-guide-to-flipgrid-basics--library-specific-tips-coronavirus-covid19\">tools<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgequest.aasl.org\/remote-learning-lessons-prek-to-4th-grade\/\">Lessons<\/a> are taking a variety of forms around familiar topics, like using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/education\/\">Library of Congress<\/a> resources to teach primary sources. The <a href=\"https:\/\/infodemic.blog\/\">pandemic<\/a> has created new opportunities for <a href=\"https:\/\/informable.newslit.org\/\">teaching media literacy<\/a> using current news. Teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/digcitcommit.org\/\">digital citizenship<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=Six-Strategies-To-Keep-Homebound-Students-Research-on-Track-librarians-covid-19-coronavirus-virtual-learning\">research<\/a> skills <a href=\"https:\/\/lookingbackward.edublogs.org\/2020\/04\/18\/online-services\/\">beyond Google<\/a> has never been more important than while school is virtual, including the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybib.com\/\">formatted bibliographies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>School Librarians are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailygazette.com\/article\/2020\/04\/29\/niskayuna-school-librarian-becomes-key-resource-for-teachers-grappling-with-online-learning\">shining<\/a> during virtual learning, but I would like to offer some final tips. Make sure you practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=Self-Care-for-School-Librarians\">self-care<\/a>. Join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/HackingSchoolLibrariesAndOtherClassrooms\/\">virtual learning communities<\/a> to stay connected, learn something new, and bounce ideas off of other School Librarians. Seek out virtual learning opportunities like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/ok2ask\/\">TeachersFirst OK2Ask<\/a> series. And, as always, make use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/?s=virtual+remote\">TeachersFirst blog<\/a> posts and <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/classroom_resources.cfm\">classroom resources<\/a> to help both teachers and students succeed in the classroom and online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School librarians and school libraries are essential in school buildings today.
