This year&#8217;s theme is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/world-refugee-day.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Together we heal, learn and, shine<\/a>.&#8221; It was first celebrated in 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/1951-refugee-convention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees<\/a> and brings attention to the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/hi\/english\/static\/in_depth\/world\/2001\/road_to_refuge\/default.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ongoing plight of refugees<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.togethermovingforward.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what can be done to help them<\/a>. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) offers some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/teaching-about-refugees.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">general information<\/a> and there are a variety of lessons about refugees available from <a href=\"https:\/\/ed.ted.com\/lessons\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-refugee-benedetta-berti-and-evelien-borgman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TED-Ed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hreusa.org\/hre-library\/topics\/refugee-rights\/lesson-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Rights Educators USA<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tes.com\/en-us\/teaching-resource\/the-refugee-crisis-stories-and-literacy-worksheets-11207503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Information<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facinghistory.org\/resource-library\/understanding-global-refugee-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understanding the global refugee crisis<\/a> is a great place to start. Lessons are available for specific student groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.blogs.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/29\/e-l-l-practice-prompt-the-life-of-a-refugee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English Language Learners<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.org\/education\/lesson-plans\/the-journey-of-a-refugee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">middle schoolers<\/a>. You can create your own lessons using a variety of different media\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/datablog\/2010\/jun\/15\/refugee-statistics-unhcr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/datadrivendj.com\/tracks\/refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">music<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2013\/03\/21\/portraits-of-refugees-posing-with-their-most-valued-possessions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photography<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/7-videos-guaranteed-to-change-the-way-you-see-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sd57.libguides.com\/c.php?g=706720&amp;p=5029459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">books<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2016\/12\/31\/484050992\/living-in-america-101-when-refugees-arrive-what-do-they-need-to-learn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">articles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/larryferlazzo.edublogs.org\/2021\/05\/03\/president-biden-does-the-right-things-raises-refugee-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current events<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual field trips<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleweb.com\/39388\/refugees-using-comics-to-cultivate-understanding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> comics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/datablog\/interactive\/2013\/jul\/25\/what-happened-history-refugees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timelines<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/finding-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Personal stories<\/a> are a great way for students to <a href=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/2015\/migrant-journeys\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connect<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/desmoines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stories<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/gallery\/2011\/jun\/20\/un-global-trends-refugees-in-pictures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refugees<\/a>. Another way for students to make connections is the variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-32057601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interactives<\/a> available about experiences like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/ng-interactive\/2014\/jan\/refugee-choices-interactive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emigrating to Europe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/refugeerepublic.submarinechannel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">life in a refugee camp<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/asylum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeking asylum in the United States<\/a>.
