But it\u2019s easy to forget that the type of activity is important as well. Changing instruction in this way increases motivation and can stimulate higher order thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what type of activities foster active learning? \u00a0Good question. \u00a0Here are a few ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Collaborative assignments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; when students work together to reach a goal, they are invested in the outcome. \u00a0One example might be to have students use\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=12744\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SearchTeam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to research a topic and then build a presentation using<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tfadmin.teachersfirst.com\/_single.php?id=16373\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Sway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; whether online or face to face, discussions can be very engaging. \u00a0Use a learning management system such as<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10606\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmodo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or an application like<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=11267\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TodaysMeet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with its new comments feature\u2014is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another engaging way to encourage discussion.
