Board of Education\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OkuiMr2tLJE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year marks the 68th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Brown-v-Board-of-Education-of-Topeka\/Decision\">Brown vs. Board of Education<\/a>, in which the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1940-1955\/347us483\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Supreme Court overturned the separate but equal doctrine<\/a> in American public schools. It is important to remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/road-to-brown\">many actions<\/a> predicated <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/tdih\/brown-v-board\/\" target=\"_blank\">this ruling<\/a>, starting with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/tdih\/benjamin-roberts-desegregation\/\" target=\"_blank\">first school desegregation suit in 1848<\/a>. You can teach it using different media like video, primary sources, and text. Monroe Elementary School in Topeka, Kansas, is now a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/brownvboard.htm\" target=\"_blank\">national historic site<\/a>. The National Park Service provides information and lesson plans. The Brown Foundation provides a virtual tour of the site. The Library of Congress exhibition Brown v. Board at Fifty: \u201cWith an Even Hand&#8221; is available online and provides an informative timeline of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever your teaching style or level, there are many <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.educationworld.com\/a_lesson\/lesson\/lesson333.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">lesson plans<\/a> available. PBS Learning hosts a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mass.pbslearningmedia.org\/resource\/brown-vs-board-of-education-video\/a-more-or-less-perfect-union\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brown vs. Board of Education lesson plan<\/a> using video and supporting materials for grades 3-12.  iCivics provides a middle\/high school <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icivics.org\/teachers\/lesson-plans\/brown-v-board-education-1954\" target=\"_blank\">mini-lesson<\/a>.  Elementary students can learn about the people involved in Brown vs. Education through a lesson plan from the National Park service. There are also quality lessons available for middle and high school from reliable sources like C-Span, Georgia College, the Annenberg Institute, and the Washington state courts using various media and primary sources.
