This year\u2019s theme is \u201cEnd racism. A.K. Chowdhury, former UN Under-Secretary-General &amp; High Representative and former head of UNICEF,\u00a0 said it best, \u201cA key ingredient in building a culture of peace is education.\u201d When students and adults alike are given opportunities to explore and learn about the lives of others around the world, they are better able to develop empathy and compassion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Literature can help improve students\u2019 global understanding. Books can launch our students into a voyage of discovery, allow them to explore other ways of being, and bring clarity to their worldview. Classified by theme and grade level, some <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/curriconnects.cfm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TeachersFirst<\/strong> <strong>CurriConnects<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>collections are perfect for sparking discussions about understanding others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Childhood Here and There<\/a> shares tales of childhood in many cultures and countries<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Real Life in Wartime<\/a> shares how real people experienced the conflicts of the 20th century.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CurriConnects Book List &#8211; Immigrants and Immigration<\/a> includes books about life as an immigrant in America.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you use one of the texts from the collections above or another medium to foster openness to other cultures, you\u2019ll want to provide students with opportunities to synthesize and share their thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can use a <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/participating-in-a-twitter-chat-101\/\">Twitter Chat <\/a>to facilitate a digital classroom discussion with secondary students. Twitter chats not only encourage digital literacy but offer a way to track participation through the chat hashtag easily. Younger students or those who need a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/2541\/walled-garden-technology#\" target=\"_blank\">walled-garden<\/a> approach can try Twiducate (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10800\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>).<\/li><li>Flip (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17677\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) offers a video discussion option to connect and discuss their thoughts on the texts. Students can share their responses to the guided questions on a digital bulletin board like Padlet (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10007\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>).<\/li><li>Use an application like Word Art (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=11147\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) to create art using phrases and words from the text that most resonated with students. You can choose to create a variety of different shapes, including a peace sign!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celebrating Peace Day doesn\u2019t need to be a huge lesson. Simply discussing what the day means and why it\u2019s important is more than sufficient.
