The <a href=\"https:\/\/medialiteracyweek.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States celebrates<\/a> from October 24 to October 28. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/medialiteracynow.org\/what-is-media-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media Literacy Now<\/a>, Media Literacy is the ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Decode media messages (including the systems in which they exist).<\/li><li>Assess the influence of those messages on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.<\/li><li>Create media thoughtfully and conscientiously.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_OCT_18_-MediaLitWk_2022_Silva.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_OCT_18_-MediaLitWk_2022_Silva-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_OCT_18_-MediaLitWk_2022_Silva-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_OCT_18_-MediaLitWk_2022_Silva-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_OCT_18_-MediaLitWk_2022_Silva.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are skills we should teach to all students, and Media Literacy Week is a great time to get started in your classes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/medialiteracyweek.us\/get-involved\/participate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">participate<\/a> in Media Literacy Week. One way is to join the fourth Global Media and Information Literacy Youth Hackathon, where students work in teams to design innovative solutions to a defined set of social media and information literacy challenges. If you\u2019re not ready to go global yet, The Media Literacy Week site has many lesson plans and resources available to help you get started. Try collaborating with your school librarian\u2014your in-house media literacy expert! No time for an entire lesson? Assign an article like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/5-steps-to-improve-your-media-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this one from Teen Vogue<\/a> for students to read, or have students play a game like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icivics.org\/games\/newsfeed-defenders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newsfeed Defenders<\/a> from iCivics. You can also join the News Literacy Project&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/newslit.org\/newslit-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NewsLit Nation<\/a>, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/mlw-teachers-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media Literacy Week Teachers\u2019 Hub<\/a>, or browse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consortiumformedialiteracy.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=category&amp;layout=blog&amp;id=12&amp;Itemid=24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MediaLit Moments<\/a> for quick ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media literacy can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/explore\/11-resources-boost-student-media-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">integrated into classrooms<\/a> beginning in <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/egusd.net\/media-literacy\/elementary-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elementary<\/a> school and continuing through college. If you\u2019re ready to dive in and <a href=\"https:\/\/medialiteracynow.org\/resources-for-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">begin incorporating media literacy<\/a> as a regular feature in your classroom, there are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.org\/education\/news-media-literacy-resource-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resources<\/a> available, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningforjustice.org\/digital-literacy-lessons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">variety of lesson plans<\/a> for students of all ages! PBS offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/ri.pbslearningmedia.org\/collection\/newsandmedialiteracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news and media literacy collection<\/a> with lessons for grades 6\u201312. Read Write Think&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readwritethink.org\/collections\/media-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media literacy collection<\/a> contains lesson plans, calendar activities, strategy guides, and professional resources for grades 3\u201312, while <a href=\"https:\/\/newseumed.org\/medialiteracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newseum<\/a> provides lesson plans for all ages.
