In maker education, &#8220;students imagine, design, and create projects that align the content of learning with hands-on application&#8221; (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/makered.org\/about\/what-is-maker-education\/\" target=\"_blank\">Makered.org<\/a>). Maker education was born from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/searcherp\/definition\/maker-movement\" target=\"_blank\">maker movement<\/a>, which believes that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalpromise.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Maker_MakingisForEveryoneInfographic-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">we are all &#8220;makers&#8221;<\/a> and can be creators\u2014not just consumers\u2014of things. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.makerspaces.com\/what-is-a-makerspace\/\" target=\"_blank\">Makerspaces<\/a> are specific spaces in schools, libraries, and community organizations that contain tools and materials people can use to make collaboratively or alone. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/keepindianalearning.org\/eight-ways-maker-education-benefits-students-educators-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Education promotes<\/a> critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, persistence, and social-emotional competencies! Many familiar education information sites like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/topic\/maker-education\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edutopia<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/maker-education\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Education Week<\/em><\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/mindshift\/tag\/maker-education\" target=\"_blank\">KQED<\/a> have maker education information sections. There are also many maker-centered sites like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/resources.makered.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MakerEd<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sparkfuneducation.com\/what-is-maker-education.html\" target=\"_blank\">SparkFun<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.makerspaces.com\/250-makerspace-resources-free-ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\">Makerspaces.com<\/a> that feature information to help you get started. Maker education can be used in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eduporium.com\/blog\/eduporium-weekly-makerspaces-in-different-areas-of-the-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\">any area of the curriculum<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/spencerauthor.com\/maker-projects-look-like-subject-area\/\" target=\"_blank\">in any subject<\/a>. Making can be incorporated into <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/using-makerspace-english-and-humanities-instruction\/\" target=\"_blank\">English<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindresearch.org\/blog\/math-makers\" target=\"_blank\">math<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iste.org\/explore\/In-the-classroom\/Maker-Minecraft-mashup-brings-social-studies-to-life\" target=\"_blank\">social studies<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/science-classroom-makerspace\/\" target=\"_blank\">science<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/shannonmmiller\/booksformakings\" target=\"_blank\">literacy<\/a>, and even the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/makeitatyourlibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">library<\/a>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/page.ideo.com\/design-thinking-edu-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\">Design thinking<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theartofeducation.edu\/2019\/08\/21\/how-to-run-a-design-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">design challenges<\/a> can be an easy and fun entry into the world of making. Start off with easy design challenges that can be done <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/diyclassroom.weebly.com\/ideas-for-teachers\/five-easy-design-challenge-activities-that-you-can-start-right-away\" target=\"_blank\">in person<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pbskids.org\/designsquad\/\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, or a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsthinkdesign.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">combination of the two<\/a>. Once your class has an understanding of design challenges, you can work up to larger scale challenges like the LEGO <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/sustainability\/children\/build-the-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">Build the Change<\/a> challenge for younger students or the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/Make-Justice-High-School-Make-It-Real-Design-Slam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Make Justice: High School &#8220;Make It Real&#8221; Design Slam for older students<\/a> (both challenges can be modified for different age groups). There are many ways to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hub\/147545\/file-1594199509-pdf\/Blog\/MakerStudentActivities_final3.pdf?t=1462299766130\" target=\"_blank\">foster the maker in your students<\/a>. Once you have decided that this maker journey is for you, explore maker <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/makerlessons.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">lessons<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/colleengraves.org\/maker-ed-lessons-by-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\">projects<\/a> to expand your maker repertoire and review <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2AIPtKyl2UA\" target=\"_blank\">maker classroom management<\/a>.
