A few highlights for April are Earth Day, National Poetry Month, and Financial Literacy Month. We can&#8217;t forget the shenanigans and tricks on April 1, but there&#8217;s no foolin&#8217; that April is also Citizen Science Month, a perfect time to explore this unique branch of science.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizen science is science for everyone\u2014an opportunity for people to help scientists with experiments, collecting data, analyzing results, and solving problems. Science is a discipline that continues to be one of history&#8217;s most significant collective efforts. Data and information are sometimes challenging for scientists to collect, and citizen scientists can assist with the process while building meaningful connections to science. The video below from\u00a0SciStarter\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=14166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) provides an overview of citizen science.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Citizen Science?\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a-JIo4MgNMo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizen science volunteers have helped the scientific community make considerable progress, and our students have the opportunity to participate.\u00a0SciStarter&#8217;s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/scistarter.org\/finder?active=true\" target=\"_blank\">project finder<\/a> is a searchable database of citizen science projects that contain a video, directions, and links for additional resources. One example is\u00a0Globe at Night, (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=10440\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>), an international citizen science project on the impact of light pollution. By participating, students learn about the topic and can make a red light to better view the night sky. Each year, bee populations are declining throughout the U.S. and Canada.\u00a0Citizen Community Science for Bees\u00a0(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19756\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) allows students to locate and take pictures of pollinators in their habitat using\u00a0iNaturalist (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=12773\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>). Students share photos with more than one million scientists, researchers, and naturalists to help protect bees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re a middle-level educator, pair your students&#8217; citizen science experiences with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/myscilife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MySciLife<\/a>. In MySciLife, students bring learning to life by using social media technology they know and like to personify science concepts, all while practicing digital citizenship skills and connecting with their peers. Your students can create an identity in MySciLife associated with your citizen science topic, then report their findings from the first-person point of view of their identity as they interact with other students. You can also explore the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/content\/edge.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">TeachersFirst Edge<\/a>\u00a0for web 2.0 tools your students can use to organize, analyze, and present information from their citizen science experiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">April is the perfect time to explore a new citizen science project or introduce your colleagues, friends, and family to citizen science.
