If you have access to a maker space, this is an excellent place for students to begin exploring and developing their devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plan and design a new invention. <\/strong>What might make your students\u2019 life more manageable? Ask them to brainstorm ideas and create an invention that meets that need.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are several different frameworks for the problem-solving process. Select one for you and your students to follow as they begin the invention process, like the the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.pdx.edu\/~sonya\/math\/Math_211_Notes\/Entries\/2010\/4\/1_Problem_Solving_I_files\/mth211-4stepprocess.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four-step process<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uapb.edu\/sites\/www\/Uploads\/Assessment\/webinar\/session%203\/NewFolder\/6%20Step%20Problem%20Solving%20Process.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six-step circular model <\/a>which provide a collaborative and systematic approach to problem solving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If building a physical invention isn\u2019t an option, ask students to share their designs using drawings and text descriptions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hold an Invention Convention. <\/strong>Explore <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/inhub.thehenryford.org\/icw\/home\" target=\"_blank\">information about these<\/a> events and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hmhco.com\/blog\/invention-convention-ideas-for-school-projects\" target=\"_blank\">inspiration for inventions<\/a>. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Invention Conventions use a seven-step model for the design process. Students complete the step-by-step process found in the curriculum to plan original, well-constructed inventions that address real-world problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/inhub.thehenryford.org\/curriculum-resources\/invention-convention-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provided curriculum<\/a> to engage K-12 students in the invention process using themes such as Jungle Survival and Pitch Practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research and learn about inventors, focusing on the design process and what we learn from inventors.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/content\/booklist-titles.cfm?id=5\" target=\"_blank\">CurriConnects book list<\/a> features options for both well- and lesser-known inventors to include with your National Inventors Month activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did you know Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job at 22 because he \u201clacked imagination and had no good ideas?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/9-influential-inventors-who-failed-multiple-times-before-reaching-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This article<\/a> shares Disney\u2019s story and eight other inventors who failed multiple times before achieving success. After introducing these stories to students, ask them to discuss and share a time when they had difficulty doing something but were eventually successful. Then, use these stories to encourage students to reflect on the skills and processes needed to complete the task successfully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conduct an invention scavenger hunt in school or at home<\/strong>. What helpful inventions do we see around us daily?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What inventions can students find at school that make their lives easier? Either make a list of items for students to find (such as electric pencil sharpeners and whiteboards) or divide students into collaborative groups to see who can create the most interesting list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask students to create a list of inventions around their house. After viewing the lists, ask discussion questions like, &#8220;What items have existed for a long time?&#8221; and &#8220;What items from your list would you want to update or invent a new product ro replace?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make your scavenger hunt an active learning experience by using Goosechase (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=17259\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) to integrate your invention scavenger hunt with another content area. For example, modify and use <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goosechase.com\/game\/9fc8f66fd4b74478997accbe3a7dba38\/copy\/\" target=\"_blank\">this template<\/a> to help students explore erosion in their environment, then have students develop an invention that would control erosion better than the current solutions they see during the scavenger hunt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celebrating National Inventors Month is an opportunity to discover the fascinating stories behind the many revolutionary creations around us and how they transform our daily lives.
