The <a href=\"https:\/\/improvingliteracy.org\/brief\/science-reading-basics\\\">Science of Reading<\/a> refers to years of research in many fields, including brain science, that indicate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmhco.com\/blog\/science-of-reading-strategies-for-reading-instruction\\\">effective strategies<\/a> for teaching students to read. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildingwings.com\/the-science-of-reading-what-it-is-and-what-it-is-not\/\">It is not<\/a> a singular program, a simple recipe for teaching reading or phonics. And it is <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/inspired-ideas-prek-12\/the-science-of-reading-for-everyone-b07594ffb242\">for every student<\/a>, regardless of age or grade!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Science of Reading consists of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexialearning.com\/blog\/a-full-breakdown-of-the-science-of-reading-components\">5 pillars of reading instruction<\/a>, which are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Phonemic awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phonics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocabulary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comprehension<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students need to achieve proficiency in all of these areas.  Struggling students will benefit from instruction based on the Science of Reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midwestteachersinstitute.org\/strong-readers-strong-students-how-the-science-of-reading-can-help-students-at-every-age\/\">regardless of age or grade<\/a>. Even if our students are proficient in reading they will still benefit from instruction based on the Science of Reading to support and elevate their skills. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023_OCT_23_SoR_Silva.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023_OCT_23_SoR_Silva-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023_OCT_23_SoR_Silva-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023_OCT_23_SoR_Silva-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023_OCT_23_SoR_Silva.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/why-putting-the-science-of-reading-into-practice-is-so-challenging\/2022\/07\">challenging to implement<\/a> in any grade.  For some, it requires a fundamental revamp of all reading instruction\/ district curriculum. For others, it requires a change in student texts and classroom aides, and for most it requires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredteachers.com\/post\/science-of-reading\">some of both<\/a>. Fortunately, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missdecarbo.com\/science-of-reading-pd-books\/\">resources<\/a> are available to support all  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learnwithlee.net\/what-does-the-science-of-reading-actually-look-like-in-the-classroom\/\">elementary<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/xqsuperschool.org\/high-school-community\/science-of-reading-in-high-schools\/\">high school<\/a> teachers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missraesroom.com\/special-education\/what-does-the-science-of-reading-have-to-do-with-special-education-teachers\">special education<\/a> teachers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ride.ri.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/xkgbur806\/files\/2023-01\/ConnectingScienceOfReadingToSpecialAreaInstruction-1026draft.pdf\">electives<\/a> teachers! Professional development around the Science of reading comes in many forms, from training to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/science-of-reading-pd-books-for-teachers\/\">books<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/amplify.com\/science-of-reading-the-podcast\/\">podcasts<\/a>. It comes down to implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spriglearning.com\/40-science-of-reading-insights-you-need-to-know-for-strategic-reading-instruction\/\">strategic reading instruction<\/a> at all levels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcu.edu\/blog\/teaching-school-administration\/teaching-tuesday-using-science-reading-everyday-classroom\">in all classes<\/a>. Knowledge of your students and their needs is critical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Science of Reading can help teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1002\/rrq.406\">meet all students where they are<\/a> to elevate their reading competency.
