But can we also use questioning strategies to change the culture of our classrooms?&nbsp; How can we help students to begin asking and exploring their own questions? In this post, we\u2019ll explore how to use questioning strategies to scaffold cultural shifts in our classrooms. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fostering Curiosity and Inquiry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the goals of using questions in the classroom is to spark students\u2019 curiosity and interest in our content and the world. We want students to wonder, ask questions, and seek answers. To foster a culture of curiosity and inquiry, we can:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023_NOV_7_Classroom_Questioning_Strategies.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023_NOV_7_Classroom_Questioning_Strategies-200x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023_NOV_7_Classroom_Questioning_Strategies-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023_NOV_7_Classroom_Questioning_Strategies-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/teachersfirst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023_NOV_7_Classroom_Questioning_Strategies.png 735w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Model curiosity<\/strong> by asking genuine questions that show our own interest and enthusiasm for the topic. For example, \u201cI wonder why Veterans Day was created?\u201d or \u201cWhat do you think people should do on Veterans Day?\u201d or \u201cHow does Veterans Day relate to what we learned about citizenship?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Encourage student-generated questions<\/strong> by providing opportunities for students to ask their own questions about the content, the process, or the product of learning. For example, we can use tools like EverFi (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Checkology (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to help students develop critical thinking and media literacy skills by asking questions about the sources, evidence, and perspectives they encounter online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support student inquiry<\/strong> by helping students explore their questions using various methods and resources. For example, we can use <a href=\"https:\/\/teachersfirst.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/choice-boards-for-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choice boards<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=19604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multimedia Text Sets<\/a> to offer students different ways to investigate a topic, such as reading articles, watching videos, conducting experiments, or interviewing experts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promoting Respect and Dialogue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second goal of using questions in the classroom is to facilitate communication and collaboration. It\u2019s important that students learn to listen to and learn from each other\u2019s perspectives and experiences. To promote a culture of respect and dialogue, we can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establish norms<\/strong> for respectful and productive discussions. For example, we can set expectations for how students will talk to each other, such as using respectful language, taking turns, building on each other\u2019s ideas, and disagreeing politely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use open-ended questions<\/strong> that invite multiple viewpoints and interpretations. For example, we can ask questions that start with \u201cHow do you\u2026?\u201d, \u201cWhat do you think\u2026?\u201d, \u201cWhy do you agree\/disagree\u2026?\u201d, or \u201cWhat evidence do you have\u2026?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Facilitate dialogue<\/strong> by providing structures and strategies that promote student interaction and exchange. For example, using <a href=\"https:\/\/resilienteducator.com\/classroom-resources\/accountable-talk-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accountable talk frames<\/a> during class discussions. We can also use protocols like Think-Pair-Share, Fishbowl, or Socratic Seminar to organize how students talk to each other in pairs, small groups, or the whole class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building a Culture of Trust and Feedback<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A third goal of questioning is to provide feedback and guidance to students. We want students to receive constructive and timely feedback from others, and also learn to self-assess and reflect on their own learning. To build a culture of trust and feedback, we can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use formative assessment<\/strong> to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. For example, we can use tools like Kahoot! (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=15292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Quizizz (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16739\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to create engaging quizzes that check for understanding and provide immediate feedback.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use descriptive feedback<\/strong> that focuses on the strengths and areas for improvement of student work. For example, we can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.risemodel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RISE model<\/a>, rubrics, or success criteria to communicate the expectations and criteria for quality work, and provide specific comments that highlight what students did well and what they need to work on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use self-assessment and reflection<\/strong> to help students evaluate their own learning and set goals for improvement. For example, we can use tools like Microsoft Forms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=18631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) or Sway (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachersfirst.com\/single.cfm?id=16373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewed here<\/a>) to create surveys or portfolios that prompt students to rate their performance, identify their challenges, and plan their next steps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Developing a Culture of Challenge and Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fourth goal is to challenge students and support their growth. Students should be exposed to different levels and types of questions that stretch their thinking and skills.\u00a0They also need to\u00a0learn to cope with uncertainty and ambiguity. To develop a culture of challenge and growth, we can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use higher-order questions<\/strong> that require students to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, or create. For example, we can use Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy or Webb\u2019s Depth of Knowledge as frameworks to design questions that move beyond recall or comprehension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use divergent questions<\/strong> that have more than one possible answer or solution. For example, we can use questions that start with \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d, \u201cHow might\u2026?\u201d, \u201cHow many ways\u2026?\u201d, or \u201cWhat are some alternatives\u2026?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use metacognitive questions<\/strong> that help students think about their own thinking and learning processes. For example, we can use questions like \u201cHow did you solve this problem?\u201d or \u201cWhat strategies did you use?\u201d or \u201cHow do you know this is correct?\u201d or \u201cWhat did you learn from this?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope this post has given you some ideas and inspiration on ways to use questioning strategies in your classroom.
