A very worthwhile site if you teach The Giver or any other Lowry book. This site is a sure winner for an introduction to a student author study in small groups or individually, as well.

Comments

In one of her speeches, the acceptance speech for The Giver, Lois Lowry concludes with this idea: "But each time a child opens a book, he pushes open the gate that separates him from Elsewhere. It gives him choices. It gives him freedom. Those are magnificent, wonderfully unsafe things." I work in a library, and I have loved science fiction for as long as I can remember. While putting books into the hands of children may be unsafe, it is also vital for those who read to live richer lives and learn to accept others better. (Even paralibrarians who split infinitives.) Take advantage of the free account provided by Humy to generate conversations on your interactive whiteboard with historical figures to introduce new lessons and units and engage students in upcoming activities. For example, before reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, select her name from the Humies to have a conversation to learn about her inspiration for writing the book and allow students to ask questions about her writing style and how she developed her storytelling skills. Use the chat conversations as a starting point for research projects on historical figures or periods. Ask students to share their projects by creating websites with Google Sites, reviewed here or by using Google My Maps, reviewed here to create an interactive story based on locations on the map.

Teachers.net offers an 'after reading' 'hands on' activity for Lois Lowry's unforgettable novel. Students will take black and white photos of objects that are integral to the story, and write a magazine introduction for the photos. Here's a great easy quick, fun, way to change the regular routine and introduce an activity students will enjoy and remember. This activity is good for students who are more reluctant readers.

The Holocaust can be a difficult subject to teach in the elementary grades. This site, created by Carol Hurst, helps teachers present the topic without focusing on the more inappropriate areas of the subject. The discussion ideas provide important questions about the characters and the activities focus on the time and setting of the book. Teachers will find this a useful entry into a study of the world during World War II.
