The John McCoy (lulilas) Since Time Immemorial curriculum is a substantial collection of ready-to-use lessons and supporting materials about tribal sovereignty, Native history, culture, treaties, government-to-government relationships, and the continuing presence of tribal nations in Washington State. Resources are organized for early learning, elementary, middle school, and high school and include unit overviews, downloadable lessons, videos, primary-source materials, assessments, implementation guides, and professional-learning resources. Individual units connect tribal perspectives with Washington history, geography, environmental study, English language arts, social-emotional learning, and civics. Many lessons encourage educators to work with local tribes and to teach about distinct sovereign nations rather than presenting Native peoples as one generalized group.

tag(s): cultures (301), native americans (169), primary sources (176)

In the Classroom

Engage students by having them closely read treaties, maps, oral histories, quotations, photographs, and tribal accounts. Ask them to annotate evidence of sovereignty, compare tribal and state or federal responsibilities, sort examples into cultural, political, economic, historical, and environmental categories, or discuss how historical decisions continue to affect communities today. Younger learners can listen to tribally appropriate stories, sketch connections among land, water, plants, animals, and community, and compare oral traditions with other ways history is preserved. Students can plot tribal homelands, treaty areas, waterways, and present-day tribal governments with Google My Maps, reviewed here, while clearly distinguishing historical territories from current reservation boundaries.

What if you could create personalized supports for every English Language Learner in your classroom without spending hours rewriting lessons? This practical and engaging video explores how artificial intelligence can help teachers differentiate instruction for ELL students more efficiently. Through real-world examples and demonstrations, educators learn how to use AI tools to adapt reading passages, simplify complex texts, generate vocabulary supports, create scaffolded activities, and provide language accommodations while maintaining grade-level expectations. The presenters emphasize that AI should enhance, not replace, teachers' expertise, helping educators save valuable planning time while making learning more accessible and engaging for multilingual learners. The strategies shared can be applied immediately to support language development, comprehension, and academic success across content areas. This video is hosted on YouTube. Schools and districts that restrict access to YouTube may need alternative access options or require content to be previewed before classroom use.

Have students read the same content at different AI-generated reading levels. After reading, mixed-ability groups can discuss the main ideas and compare how the information was presented. This discussion helps all learners access grade-level concepts while building confidence and comprehension. Have students use AI-generated study guides that include simplified explanations, summaries, and comprehension questions. Students can review the material independently, then collaborate with classmates to deepen their understanding of the topic. Provide AI-generated writing supports such as sentence starters, paragraph frames, and model responses. Students can use these scaffolds to complete essays, reflections, or content-area writing assignments, gradually removing supports as their skills grow.

Afterward, have them write a summary in their own words. Divide the class into groups, each listening to a different article related to the unit of study (e.g., ecosystems, civil rights leaders). Have students present their findings to the class, comparing perspectives and building research synthesis skills. Have English Language Learners or struggling readers follow along in the written text while listening to the article. Then have students practice reading a short excerpt aloud themselves to improve pronunciation, fluency, and confidence.

Geniventure is a gamified, engaging way to explore genetics by breeding and studying virtual dragons. The site is developed by The Concord Consortium, a nonprofit educational research organization. Geniventure includes both online and offline activities. Students play through six levels of challenges, conducting simulated experiments that generate realistic and meaningful genetic data. A free account is required and includes a full teacher guide that tracks student progress and provides teaching strategies.

In the Classroom

Geniventure is free and easy for teachers to use. You can create classes, assign activities, save student work, and track student progress. Sessions couple online gameplay with hands-on activities and labs conceptually linked to a part of the Geniventure game. All materials for Geniventure sessions are available, including daily session schedules, activity outlines lesson plans, PowerPoint slides, lists of materials for each activity, and support for English as a New Language/English Language learners (ENL/ELL). The materials are targeted toward middle school students, but can also be used in higher grade levels.

I am hoping to use this with my 8th graders for an extension activity. Jennifer, MI, Grades: 9 - 12

In the Classroom

Bookmark Quillbot as a supplement to your current curricular materials and a resource for students to use for practice and remediation in writing skills. The courses also provide practice and instruction for use with English Language Learners. Share with college-bound students to use in preparation for college-level courses. Include a link to Quillbot's resources on your class webpage for easy access at any time. Consider curating resources for students using Wakelet, reviewed here, for sharing a collection that includes commonly-used lessons. Find and assign individual topics to students or classes to address specific areas that need additional instruction. For example, when students struggle with the proper use of commas, give and discuss any of the activities found on Quillbot that provide instruction and practice. As students make revisions, ask them to share the before-and-after changes in their writing. For example, when working with Google Docs, ask students to submit an original draft and the finished product, and reflect upon the changes and revisions made. Offer students the option to include an audio recording of their reflections using Audio Pal, reviewed here, and share the link to the recording in the final Google Document.

Start or convert your podcasting to Acast's free account. There are many benefits to a free account, such as unlimited hours of audio and editing; with Acast, there are no limits for storage, uploads, or downloads. In addition, you will have your own podcast website that updates automatically, and, unlike other podcast programs, there are no limits to which podcast app you use, and a bonus to that is a one-click distribution to all podcast listening apps. Another advantage with Acast is that you get a free web player that can be embedded on your website, blog, and social media. On top of all that, you get free analytics that shows episode performance, geography, and more. As if all of this isn't enough, if you use another podcasting program, easily switch over to Acast. Be sure to look at the Acast Essentials Toolkit which is free and will explain all areas of podcast production and it features insights from well-known podcast creators.

In the Classroom

With older students (and strong readers), you may want to pair them up and have them read Aclass Essentials for the basics of podcasting. Using Fiskkit, reviewed here, with this article will enhance student learning. Create regular podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki. Record class assignments or directions. Record story time or a reading excerpt for younger ones to listen to at a computer center AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning and build fluency by recording selected passages for your non-readers. Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Challenge students to create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News," encourage and extend learning and have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Invite students to write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. English language learners or students just beginning to read could record their fluency by reading passages. Allow parents to hear their child's progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Challenge your Shakespeare students to record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father's or Mother's Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini-casts without needing any additional tools.
