In the Classroom

Before diving into an online lesson (e.g., magnetism or ecosystems), set up physical stations with related materials (e.g., magnets, soil samples, weather charts) for hands-on exploration and prediction. As students complete lessons, have them keep a digital journal using Book Creator reviewed here or paper journal with entries summarizing what they learned, diagrams of key concepts, and one "I wonder..." question to promote inquiry. Have students select a topic from the website and teach it to the class using visuals or interactive elements from the lesson.

In the Classroom

Create riddles describing various body parts or systems using information from the site. Students take turns guessing and then locating that part or system on a diagram. Using the interactive diagrams on the site, students draw and label the major organs, then explain each organ's function in their own words. Pair students to explore both the English and Spanish versions of an article or video. They can identify and compare key terms, creating a mini glossary of science vocabulary in both languages.

Make bingo cards using Bingo Card Creator reviewed here. Use cards with names or images of human body parts and systems. As you call out clues, students mark their bingo boards. After learning about the five senses, have students go on a classroom or school "sense walk" and document what they see, hear, smell, feel, and taste (where appropriate). Give students cards with organ names and functions; have them sort them into the correct system using materials from the site as references. Make the cards online using Flippity reviewed here.

After reading about or watching a segment on health science careers from the NIH site, have students create mini-posters using DesignCap Poster Creator reviewed herehighlighting a biomedical profession, what it involves, and how it helps people. Begin with a simple body outline, then ask students to guess and draw which organs or systems are inside. Follow up with NIH videos or diagrams to compare and discuss their accuracy. Students can create an illustrated mini-book that explains how various systems (e.g., circulatory, skeletal, nervous) work together to perform everyday actions like eating, running, or thinking.

In the Classroom

Provide students with cards showing different organs and another set with body systems (e.g., digestive, circulatory). Have them match each organ to the correct system and explain its function. Set up learning stations with short clips, diagrams, and mini-experiments or models focused on specific systems (e.g., pulse checking for the circulatory system, balloon lungs for the respiratory system). In the Classroom

This animation is a "must-use" for science classes! All learners will appreciate the use of animations to learn about how the eye works; however, it is especially useful for visual learners to "see" the process in motion. Provide a link to this site or embed it on your class website for students to use when learning about anatomical features. Include this animation along with videos, articles, and other information in an interactive learning platform such as Curipod, reviewed here. Upon completion of your learning activities, have students demonstrate learning by creating explainer videos using FlexClip, reviewed here, that explain the process of how eyes work.

Especially younger students will enjoy this feature. Create a link to the site on your classroom website or blog for students to use for review and practice at home. In the Classroom

Flip your classroom and use a video as homework. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. Or, use a tool like playposit,reviewed here, for students to pause videos and ask or answer questions right on the video. These activities can uncover misconceptions. Show the video to the class, and then discuss the concept at length. To share a single video from this site without all the YouTube clutter, View Pure, reviewed here, and create a shortcut to the View Pure page directly on the desktop. For more advanced classes, provide time for students to choose a video to view and research the underlying concept.

Find virtual labs and activities sorted by topics such as cells, body systems, and ecology. Use the search bar to look for specific content. In addition to the interactives and virtual labs, Bioman Biology offers online multiple choice quizzes over most topics. Optional teacher registration on the site provides the opportunity to assign quizzes and view student scores for games, quizzes, and virtual labs. Registration also has the advantage of students being able to directly submit their scores to you via email. Several activities are also available as downloads at iTunes. Bioman is available as an iOS app and on any device with a modern web browser and Internet access.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site to your class on an interactive whiteboard or projector to review and reinforce concepts. Browse through featured, most viewed, or all videos. Interested in seeing how a germ travels with a sneeze and makes you sick with a virus? There is a detailed video on that topic and SO much more. Read short descriptions of videos before viewing. Share using social media links provided, with a direct url, or with the embed code directly onto your website. Free registration on All Things Science allows you to save videos to favorites, add comments, and upload video. Note that videos can be submitted by members, so it is advisable to preview before sharing with young people.

In the Classroom

Save this site to use as a resource throughout the year with any science topic. Embed videos onto your classroom website for viewing at home or independently during class. (Embedding avoids displaying other areas of the site.) Have students create online posters after they learn about the topic individually or together as a class using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here. Extend learning by challenging cooperative learning groups to create similar videos about science topics being discussed in class using FlexClip, reviewed here. View the videos, health tips, injury or disease causes or symptoms, and other structures. Choose which system to view: urinary, digestive, reproductive, muscular, nervous, or many others. Of course, this site is "anatomically correct."

Use this resource in an anatomy/physiology, biology, or health class. Use as a resource to understand structure and function as well as common health ailments and their effects. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Provide this link on your website for students to use who are studying human body systems. This site is begging to be used on a projector or interactive whiteboard! Share the systems that you are currently teaching. Use this in conjunction with any vertebrate dissection for comparison to the human systems. Use in a health class for great visuals and quizzing of the human systems being studied. Discuss additional issues with systems. For example, discuss the different types of injuries that can occur in the skeletal and muscular system with sports and other injuries. Have students create a multimedia presentation to share with the class about one of the topics learned at this site. This excellent reference resource is an attractively packaged compilation of ways to get answers to science questions. Offerings include a place to ask questions from K-college, access to a search engine, a list of FAQ's on common topics, a library with links to other relevant sites, a knowledge generator, an archive of lab experiments, and other assistance with science fair projects. The Mad-Sci labs also have a "Guided Tour of the Visible Human" section on human anatomy, with many images of cross-sections and internal organs.

Navigate the human body and label parts on an interactive whiteboard, or find the appropriate experiments for all your science concepts.
