Join Cowboy Jack and Life Safety Officer Giraud for an engaging introduction to fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and everyday child safety. During this approximately 19-minute visit to Montgomery County Emergency Services District 3, viewers learn why quick evacuation matters, how smoke and heat behave during a fire, why working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms matter, and how families can create home escape plans with multiple ways out. The pair also examines different types of fire extinguishers and demonstrates the PASS method, discusses common household fire hazards such as unattended cooking and improperly stored batteries, and introduces first aid and water-safety basics. The conversational format, real safety equipment, fire truck setting, demonstrations, and repeated safety reminders make potentially serious topics approachable for younger viewers. If your district blocks YouTube, you won't be able to view the video.

Have students watch the sections about smoke alarms and home escape plans, then draw a simple floor plan of a fictional home. Ask them to mark doors and windows and, when available, identify two possible exits from each room. Invite small groups to make a fire-safety presentation with Microsoft PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Assign each group one topic from the video, such as smoke alarms, escape planning, household hazards, carbon monoxide alarms, or emergency preparedness, and have students teach the essential points to classmates. Ask students to complete an individual "3-2-1 Safety Check" after viewing. Have them record three fire-prevention facts, two emergency-preparedness actions, and one safety idea they want to share with their family.

Make fire and life safety instruction practical with this collection of ready-to-use lesson plans from the National Fire Protection Association. These materials cover home fire escape planning, calling 9-1-1, responsible decision-making, fire risks, and other safety topics for different ages and audiences. Several resources are designed as concise 10-minute mini-lessons, while others provide more extensive instruction for specific groups. For example, an early-adolescent lesson for grades 6-8 focuses on fire-safe behaviors for students who may stay home alone, while another helps young adolescents evaluate risky fire-related behaviors and make safer choices. Lesson materials typically provide an audience, objective, suggested timing, instructional steps, discussion questions, and supporting safety messages, making the collection useful for classroom health lessons, community safety programs, and visits from firefighters or other safety educators.

In the Classroom

Have students analyze fictional situations involving cooking, fireworks, bonfires, electrical equipment, or other potential hazards. Ask them to identify the risk and propose a responsible choice that could reduce it. Invite students to practice explaining what they would do when a smoke alarm sounds. Have pairs role-play getting outside, going to a designated meeting place, and explaining when and how to call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Ask students to create a fire-safety infographic using Canva for Education, reviewed here. Students can focus each infographic on one NFPA lesson topic, such as escape planning, smoke alarms, responsible behavior, or emergency calls.

Include this as part of any study of this period of time in Europe. Allow students to explore the site independently or in small groups, then compare and contrast life in London then to modern life. Improve and expand learning by having students create a multimedia presentation using Visme, reviewed here. Visme allows you to narrate your slides. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report.

This collection, provided by the National Fire Protection Association is amazing. Here you will find fire prevention facts, products to help families stay safe, special materials for parents (and teachers, too), an online quiz for both students and families, and more! At the time of this review, the message for the year was "Protecting Your Families and Loved Ones From Fire." The approach, at the time of this review, is multimedia; in addition to the quiz, there are audio public service announcements, a blog, an upcoming webinar, and safety videos. For younger children, the familiar Sparky the Dog offers fun activities. Accompanying safety tip sheets benefit everyone, and a focus on high-risk populations assures you that everyone will have a fighting chance against fire.

Try pair teaching after introducing the important facts available on this page. Have the first of a pair give the other student the facts and then have the second add to what the first has missed. Have your class make their own posters using this year's campaign logo. Have students replace paper and enhance learning by creating online posters using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here. Have your class create check sheets they can take home and do their own domestic assessment. As part of their extensive site for vocabulary, roots, and more, MyVocabulary.com has added a themed area for Fire Safety. Find interactive vocabulary activities using Fire Safety-related vocabulary words. You will also find printable crosswords, fill in the blanks and more, all using the same theme words. This and other "themes" available on the site will make vocabulary development fun.

In the Classroom

Share the puzzles on your interactive whiteboard or projector or make them available as links on your teacher public page. Modify learning and have students (or groups) create their own illustrated dictionaries of terms using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. As you add more vocabulary lists during the year, have them select their favorite 6-10 terms from each list to add to their "book."

In the Classroom

During Fire Prevention week, use these songs or crafts to teach students fire safety. Have students create greeting cards for their families. Print out the coloring pages for students to work on as they enter the classroom. Create a bulletin board displaying your crafts, coloring pages, and more.
