10 Resources for National Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate the histories and cultural contributions of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and other locations. The observance starts on September 15 to commemorate the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries: Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. Share this week’s collection of resources with your students.

Cesar Chavez: Labor Leader and Civil Rights Activist Video

This resource includes a lesson plan that integrates a video into a broader topic. Students learn about Cesar Chavez by examining a primary source document that displays an image of him organizing workers outside a supermarket in 1969.

Grades 3-6

Reading Trek: Esperanza Rising

TeachersFirst Reading Treks use Google Maps to create a virtual field trip of resources about a piece of literature. This Trek and its instructional guide provide inspiration and lesson suggestions for the popular trade book “Esperanza Rising.”

Teaching Central America: Teaching Ideas for Elementary

This resource shares lessons and guides to support educators in teaching about Central America. Topics include lessons based on Hispanic-themed fiction and nonfiction picture books, an interactive map, and short biographies of Central American leaders.

The Kennedy Center Dance Collection

Explore the culture and history of dance worldwide and its importance in telling stories through movement and music. Learn Latin dances like bachata and flamenco and watch a video about other Latin dances or the Pacífico Dance Company.
