Lincoln Lesson Idea: Through the Eyes of a Child

Abraham Lincoln

Level - Elementary

Subjects - Social Studies, History, Research, Drama, Writing, Language Arts

Objectives:
Students will compare life in the 1860s to life in the 2000s.

Activity:
Research what life was like for children in your hometown in the 1860s. Compare this to life in the 2000s. Have students pretend they live in the 19th century. What would a day in your classroom (circa 1860) be like? Have students create a video clip sharing their findings (maybe even a reenactment back into the 1860s) to share with families using TeacherTube. If video is too challenging, have them write the script for a short skit, instead.

Have students create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between classrooms in the 1860s and the 2000s using the TeachersFirst resource, Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram.

Tips:
If you are going to video the students and share using TeacherTube, be sure to obtain parental permission first!
