This site provides countless books, films, plays, and television shows that all relate to specific math concepts. What a fabulous way to integrate math, language arts, history, and more! The site includes the title, year, and brief description. Teachers can browse by genre, medium, motif, and/or topic. Media include everything from comic books to plays to television series. Genres include historical fiction, children's literature, adventure/espionage, fantasy, science fiction, and more. Sixty-three fiction offerings are even available FREE (in their entirety) online! The site is still developing and frequently adds additional fiction titles. Students who enjoy fantasy will also enjoy choosing books from this site, since the author admits that not all math mentioned in all the books is "real" math!! The site allows teachers to search by keyword and also to browse new offerings in the compilation of titles.

Looking for extra practice and better ways to track student progress? Use this free site for explanations of concepts, see example problems, and answer a practice problem. The English is British style, so remember that "revise" on this site means the same as "review" to Americans. Teachers can register their students to follow their progress. Registration is free, but does require an email address. If you plan to have students register individually, you may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. Here is a blog post that tells how to set up GMail subaccounts to use for any online membership service.
Data on correct and incorrect answers as well as strengths and weaknesses are kept for students. This site does include some minor advertisements. Watch out for a link to "essay paper" buried at the far bottom right on the home page: a place to purchase essays online!

Ever wonder what it would be like to have open access to lectures at Harvard? Stanford? MIT? Academic Earth gives you that access in a limited fashion. This site contains thousands of video lectures by some of the most well-regarded professors at several of the top universities in the US. You can sort the lectures by subject, by lecturer, by university, or by "playlist." The playlists sort lectures from various topics and multiple professors into thematic groups. Within individual subjects, there are individual lectures and courses--collections of lectures by the same professor on a general subject. Watch a lecture on "The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877," or "The American Novel since 1945," or "Linear Algebra." The topic possibilities go on and on.

In the Classroom
These are college-level lectures given at Ivy-league universities. The subject matter and the complexity of the subject matter will be beyond many high school students, and the delivery format (video-taped lecture) means there is a certain "MEGO" (my eyes glaze over) effect when viewing these offerings. However, for gifted or academically talented students, these lectures may be exactly the kind of enrichment they have been thirsting for. Provide a link to these lectures for times when a student or two has gotten way ahead of the rest of the class. Let parents know about this site for home use. Refer students who are doing in-depth research. And in your own copious free time, check one out yourself! Most are secondary level, but a few are for lower grades. If you click on the TITLE of the movie, you will be lead to a site to purchase, rate, and/or view the movie in its entirety. To avoid this confusion, be sure to click on the link below the description.
In the Classroom
Use the links "Begin of Lectures in College teaching" and "The end of lectures in college teaching" to identify effective and ineffective teaching elements at all levels. Use these clips for anticipatory set or activators at the start of a lesson or introduction of a concept. Share the video clips on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Discuss the concepts as a class or have students work in cooperative learning groups. See if students can identify any other movie or television show that has used math concepts. Use higher level thinking skills and provide active learning by using the lessons on this site. Visit the "Lessons" page to view lessons grouped into four categories: Concept Lessons, Project-Based Learning, Exploratory, and Measurement. Use the "Community" page to collaborate or submit lesson ideas. Click on the "Update" page to view new lessons or resources added. The "Resource" page contains links to other sites and tutorials that are useful. NOTE that you must have the FREE Google Earth reviewed hereinstalled on your computer to use these terrific ideas.

This site offers FREE interactive math tools: qualitative grapher, piecewise linear grapher, linear transformer, function analyzer, quadratic transformer, system solver, plopit, and proportioner. Originally the interactives required special software, but they now run directly from the web site without any special installation or download. The interactives all include a real-time connection between math concepts (graphical or symbolic) and the representations. The activities provide visual illustrations to enhance algebra class. They allow for accelerated learning. And you are even able to save images to share with classmates.
The "Qualitative Grapher" demonstrates the meaning of a function and see how it can be seen as something changing over time. The "Proportioner" highlights scale and proportion and allows you to compare image dimensions. All of the other individual activities highlight other upper level math skills. This site requires Java and Adobe Acrobat. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Students can practice math skills independently (and in both English and Spanish) with this collection of challenging, interactive practice activities, organized by grade level and topic. Click Spanish version at the top for your ESL/ELL students to have access to the same valuable resources! The website says the activities are designed for students in grades K through eight. Topics vary greatly and include algebra, statistics, counting, comparing, decimals, basic operations, exponents, fractions, and many others. Nearly every math topic taught in elementary or middle school, will be found at this site. Once you click on the general topic area, be prepared for a HUGE list of specific choices to explore. Each math concept is explained in a simple paragraph and then students are presented with practice activities about the specific concept. The practice activities are timed.
Be aware there are several advertisements at this website (all appropriate). But considering this site is free (and full of ready to go math activities), the advertisements are worth the minor annoyance.

Math train is a "kids teaching kids" math project created from Mr. Marcos (and his students) of Lincoln Middle School. Browse student created, teacher created, or captioned math videos easily found using the search function. Videos can be viewed without a login. Most videos focus on a very specific topic and are short in length. Use the url or the embed code to share the video and add comments. Teachers and students can join math train and upload videos to teach math concepts to others. Registration requires an email account. Check your district's acceptable use policy regarding student use of email addresses. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page. Note: the "we are upgrading" message does not prevent you from using the site!

Use this site as a resource to teach students basic and more complex math problems. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share this site with your students. Students can also be assigned a similar project in the classroom for peer teaching and learning. Use a class website or wiki to show your student-created video or register on the Math train site to upload video in this education-specific environment. (Of course you will want to check your school policies on sharing student work online. You might even use the Record feature of your interactive whiteboard software, if your computer has the memory to handle it. Have students view a video and create problem sets for other students to solve. Students can identify potential real life problems and the math skill necessary to solve it. This is definitely a site that you will want to save in your favorites and visit often (they add new videos frequently). Each category includes numerous interactive activities. The site is frequently updated. There are some small advertisements at the site. Show difficult-to-understand concepts on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Use these Interactives by having students predict outcomes and then carry out the experiment, such as in rolling die to determine probabilities. Students can then apply the information to a new set of problems. Use many of the interactives as a class game. The Bitesize Algebra website includes review activities (titled "revise" at this BBC website), interactive videos, online tests, and more. The main topic areas include Formulas and Equations, Inequalities, Graphs, Quadratic Graphs, & Sequences. Each topic area includes numerous subtopics. This site was created by BBC, so you may notice some slight spelling differences and British currency instead of dollars. If you are outside of the UK, the video may say the content is not available in your location. The rest of the content is well worth your time.
