The site uses the Library's standard HTML layout, and as usual, the stars of the exhibit are the archival images that have been digitized and included. If advertising is a measure of society's interests, this site offers a unique glimpse into the past.

This is a rich resource of primary source materials, introductions to historical analysis, factual material, and much more. The site concentrates on both historical content and the craft of teaching history. This makes it an ideal starting point for social studies or history teachers interested in a fresh approach to their curriculum.

In the Classroom
This site offers a treasure trove of primary sources that would be useful for any history classroom. Teachers can either use the sources to supplement their lectures, or can use them to start a debate with students on the qualities of effective primary sources. Separate students into groups, and provide each group with a different primary source, although from the same time frame you are studying in class. Have the groups analyze the sources, and a list of reasons as to why or why not their source is a reliable source. From then on, have the groups debate in class which is the most reliable by way of class debate. Much of the content in this Library of Congress site about Thomas Edison and his phonographs is beyond the scope of middle schoolers. However, there are sound recordings from the original machines that let students listen to the product of Edison's work, and the basic biographical information will be useful for those studying inventors. Explore this one in some depth; there's a lot here.

Download some of the sounds and recordings from the database, and use them as part of a learning center during a unit on Inventions & Inventors. Have students listen to the recordings (make sure to include headphones) on classroom computers, writing a short reflection afterwards about what they heard and what their impression was. Students could also compare and contrast the quality of the recordings, noting the vast differences in technology between then and now. Follow the Pilgrims from religious conflict in England to Holland and finally across the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower in 1620. This National Park Service reading explains the difference between Puritans and Separatists, why the Pilgrims left England, the challenges of organizing their voyage, their unexpected arrival at Cape Cod, and the creation of the Mayflower Compact. The page also includes the complete text of the Compact and a list of signers, providing teachers with a useful primary-source component for close reading and civic connections. The straightforward chronological narrative works well as background reading before lessons about Plymouth Colony, colonial government, religious freedom, or early English settlement.

What happened to the colonists who disappeared from Roanoke Island? This National Park Service resource introduces students to the enduring mystery of the Lost Colony through a chronological set of readings about the English voyages of 1584, 1585, 1587, and John White's return in 1590. Students can follow the changing goals and difficulties of the expeditions, including relationships with Carolina Algonquian peoples, shortages, conflict, English-Spanish rivalry, and the clues left behind when the settlement was abandoned. A linked section on major theories asks readers to weigh evidence for possibilities such as hurricanes, famine and disease, Spanish attack, or relocation to the Chesapeake Bay, Albemarle Sound, or Croatoan. The combination of historical narrative, maps, images, quotations, and competing theories makes the resource especially useful for evidence-based history activities.

Assign small groups one theory from the Major Theories page and have them create an evidence chart listing facts that support the theory, facts that weaken it, and unanswered questions. Groups can then conduct a class hearing in which they argue for the explanation best supported while acknowledging uncertainties. Have students map Roanoke Island, Croatoan or Hatteras Island, Albemarle Sound, and the Chesapeake Bay with Google My Maps, reviewed here, adding notes that explain why each location matters to a theory about the colonists' fate. The NPS theories section specifically considers possible movement toward each of these locations. Invite students to examine the historical maps, illustrations, and other visual evidence alongside the written narratives, then annotate what each source reveals and what it cannot prove. Explore layers of American history through the stories preserved at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The site examines the Algonquian-speaking people of the region, the English voyages and mystery of the Lost Colony, the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony during and after the Civil War, archaeology, and later developments such as early radio experiments. Teachers will find history and culture articles, photographs, John White watercolors, short ranger videos, a 29-minute virtual learning program for grades 4-8, field trip programs, and classroom education resources. The education section includes options for in-person, classroom, and virtual learning, as well as lesson plans on the Lost Colony and the Freedmen's Colony.

Ask students in small groups to trace the English voyages and major events surrounding Roanoke Island with Timeline Tool by Read Write Think, reviewed here, creating a chronological timeline that distinguishes exploration, conquest, settlement, and John White's return. Have students work in pairs to investigate the site's Lost Colony theories, sort the evidence supporting or challenging each explanation, and defend which theory they find most convincing in a short evidence-based discussion. The NPS presents multiple proposed explanations and discusses strengths and weaknesses of the evidence connected with them. Have students collaborate on a geographic investigation using Google My Maps, reviewed here, to mark Roanoke Island and other locations important to the English voyages, proposed Lost Colony movements, and the Civil War-era Freedmen's Colony. Though the title is probably misleading, this site's collection of information about the presidencies of our nation's leaders has plenty of facts, but little context. One of the more interesting features are the links to historical documents from different presidencies. This one's useful for very basic research, but it lacks the "who did what" aspects that can make history really interesting.

Because this is a very organized presentation of the presidents, it would be extremely easy to compare presidents about very specific points. This would be useful in a class discussion of political party differences, campaign spending & finance, and legislation decisions. For comparison purposes, we recommend using an online Venn Diagram to be used on the interactive whiteboard or projector. This is a fascinating oral history project, created by Rhode Island high school students and Brown University, which documents individual recollections of the turbulent events of 1968, from the war in Viet Nam to assassinations and political upheaval. Written texts as well as audio files make the information available using any browser. Great discussion starter; can also be used as a reference for more detailed study.

Play these interviews within your own classroom to supplement text or lecture material about Vietnam, Civil rights or Women's Rights. Play the interviews over the interactive whiteboard or projector, allowing students to follow along with the transcripts for better comprehension. One way to assess what students are hearing and learning from the interviews is to have students create an online graphic to share using Visme.
