Explore practical ways to use Google Maps and Google Earth through this short collection of video tutorials. The playlist demonstrates mapping and tour-building techniques, including creating a custom Google Map and developing tours with Google Earth or Google Maps. These step-by-step videos can support teacher professional learning or introduce students to digital mapping before they begin a geography, history, science, or community-research project. Because interfaces and features change, teachers should preview each tutorial and compare the directions with the current version of the tool. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Have students explore a real-world location connected to a unit of study, such as a historical site or natural wonder, using Google Earth. They can record observations and questions about what they see from different viewpoints. Using Google Maps tools, students can measure distances between key locations along a migration route, trade path, or scientific expedition, and compare them using math skills. Students can design their own narrated Google Earth tour about a topic they are researching, such as landforms, national parks, or famous landmarks, and present it to the class.
