Imagine the fun and challenge of painting-by-number - without the mess. This unique site provides a virtual coloring experience with lots of bells and whistles. Choose a category and level of difficulty, check out the tools (zoom, timer), and start the recreation of a masterpiece. Themes include holidays, historic figures, works by well-known artists, famous places, and so much more. You won't have to stretch to find a way to link this hands-on activity with a curricular area. Use to build number recognition and mouse skills with younger students, or help older students recognize the complexity of color, shading, and composition.

In the Classroom

Great activity to make available on a classroom computer as a reward, or incorporate into a study of a represented artist. Challenge secondary art students to create their own "paint-by-number" activity and convert to a scanned and printable activity for younger students.

In the Classroom

Take some time to poke around to find the gem that will spice up your art classroom. This is a great site to use in the elementary classroom, and in art electives classes in middle grades and high school. Be sure to share it with other teachers on your campus and put a link to this tool on your class website for students to use at home. Enhance learning by using a visual blogging tool such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. Save the URL for your blog! This blog creator requires no registration. The students can blog about their work and even create an online portfolio. Host an art show at your school for families and the communities to showcase the students' creativity. Your students can describe their work as visitors explore the gallery. In a language arts class have students brainstorm to analyze the character(s), setting, and situation of a painting and create an original story. Explore this site before a trip to an art museum.

This site would be useful in a Art History or US government class studying the impact of the media on politics. Have students explore the site on the interactive whiteboard, allowing them to be hands on with the material - avoid being the Vanna White of the board! As students are navigating the site, focus their attention on how many presidents and political figures are featured - as evidenced on the link entitled "Most Featured Person." This could lead into a great discussion of how exposure can affect politicians, as well as the difference between good and bad press.

The Library of Congress features more than 70 color photographs - taken between 1939 and 1943 - that vividly capture the effects of the Great Depression on rural and small-town America and highlights the economic growth that preceded World War II. This is great visual resource for a 20th century American history class. Photography students can use the site to examine how the "Kodachrome" era changed the way we view our collective past.

tag(s): 1930s (40), 1940s (68), 20th century (168), great depression (31), images (256), photography (130)

In the Classroom

It's interesting how viewing the images in color makes the viewer feel as though the Great Depression was something far more recent - perhaps due to the dated feeling of black and white images. In a discussion of the Great Depression, spend some time comparing these images and the traditional black and white images on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Ask students about the differences and if one is more revealing or not. This can also lead into a discussion on the reliability of primary sources and the effects of seeing something rather than reading it.

In the Classroom

The third topic is 75 (80) Christmas Crafts for Kids. On an interactive whiteboard or with a projector use Padlet, to choose several of the crafts you and your students think they might enjoy making. Even before having students choose the craft, they want to work on, start gathering materials; the materials don't have to be for the craft they are making, but create a "general materials" box, or area in your classroom. Many of the ideas use inexpensive or free materials! For those that don't, think creatively (use paper plates instead of real plates). You and your students may want to plan on walking around the school, they can walk through their neighborhoods to find twigs and such. Perhaps some of the families have old yarn they can donate. Allow individuals and small groups to choose the craft they would like to make.
