Students reading Twain's books may be surprised to know that he lived in Hartford, not along the Mississippi. This site from the restored home offers a virtual tour, a kids' section with a word search, and some very basic information about the house. This one's worth a look for those interested in late 19th century architecture.

tag(s): architecture (65), mark twain (8)

In the Classroom

Teachers wanting to introduce some of Twain's personal life before or after reading one of his books can do just that with this site. Share the site with students on the interactive whiteboard, watching the virtual tour or examining the exhibits. There may not be a ton of information, but this is a great way to get students started on understanding just a little bit more about the famous author.

Use this site as an supplement to the book "One Thousand Paper Cranes." After the students have completed the book, use some class time to allow students to create their own cranes in class. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to explore it further in cooperative learning groups. Once students have created a crane, encourage them to try more complicated shapes and figures! This is a great way to lead into a conversation on the significance of origami and why it was so important in the book.

It's a good general resource for examples of artwork from young people of all ages. It would also be a great source to see how children have reacted to learning about specific topics such as world hunger and the holocaust.

Discover the many works of Dante Gabriel Rossett - painter, designer, writer, and translator. On the menu at the top click exhibits and objects to find a varied list that categorizes Rossett's works: Double Works, Pictures, Poems, Prose, Translations, Books, Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Material Design. Scroll down the page to find biographical information about this man who some say was the most important and original artistic force in the second half of the nineteenth century in Great Britain.

tag(s): art history (89)

In the Classroom

Introduce the exhibits and objects page with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard and have the students partner read the biographical information about Rossett. Have students take notes using Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Next show students how to navigate the exhibits and objects page. Ask partners or small groups to choose one topic from the list of Pictures, Poems, etc. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own, continuing to take online notes. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as DIY, reviewed here.

For project based learning in any class, share this tool as a resource to add visual impact to students' research projects. Social studies teachers can include lessons about making African art during units about that continent. Encourage your artistically inclined students to explore on their own. Explore this site before a trip to an art museum or to find inspiration for a display or culminating project in a teaching unit. You may even find some bulletin board ideas for your classroom! Ask students to document their learning stages by taking photos of their art and editing them and then making a collage with Photo Joiner Collage Maker, reviewed here. Encourage older students to keep their work in a portfolio for future use with Pathbrite, reviewed here.

Combining history, math, culture, art/design, and community awareness, this unit uses the quilt as a tool toward understanding African American culture. Students are introduced to the African homeland, the "story quilts" of Harriet Powers, and the significance of quilt-making in African American society. Individual quilt squares are designed and sown together to create a "story quilt" for the entire class.

Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of prehistoric cave drawings. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This is a great way to introduce content in a way that gets students thinking, as well as avoiding the typical lecture format.

A lot of the questions asked by the site are excellent examples of digging deeper or asking questions that are useful in interviews. Could be an excellent writing prompt.
