The Mississippi Writers and Musicians website is a helpful and easy-to-use resource that now includes not just authors and musicians, but also artists and actors from Mississippi. It is run by the Mississippi Writers and Musicians group. The site features short biographies, facts, and information about the lives and work of many famous Mississippians. The University of Mississippi first developed it, but now it offers even more. This is a great place for students to learn about the people who have shaped Mississippi's culture in writing, music, art, and film.

Give students a list of fun facts (e.g., "Won a Grammy," "Wrote a bestselling novel") and a list of names from the site. Students can use the website to match each fact with the correct person. In the Classroom
Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of prehistoric cave drawings. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. In Language Arts class, determine characterization, story, or details discovered in each image. Challenge gifted learners to analyze and synthesize current events in ways that they have yet to discover!
